Just ten percent of adults in this country are claiming to be happy in their job. The vast majority of course will take no action. The fact that you’ve got this far at least means that you’re considering or may be ready for a change.
We’d politely request that in advance of taking a course of training, you run through some things with a mentor who can see the bigger picture and can make recommendations. Such a person will go through personality profiling with you and assist in finding the right role for you:
* Is working with other people your thing? Are you better with new people or those you know well? Maybe you like to deal with tasks that you deal with by yourself?
* Do you have a preference which market sector you could be employed in? (In this economy, it’s vital to choose carefully.)
* Is this the final time you envisage re-training, and if so, do you believe this career choice will allow you to do that?
* Would it be useful for the course you’re re-training in to be in an area where you believe your chances of gainful employment are high up to retirement age?
A predominant industry in the UK that can satisfy a trainee’s demands is the IT sector. There’s a need for more skilled people in this sector, simply have a look at a local job site and you’ll discover what we mean. But don’t think it’s all nerdy people sitting in front ofscreens all day long - there’s a lot more to it than that. The majority of employees in the industry are just like the rest of us, but they enjoy their work and get well paid.
With all the options available, it’s not really surprising that the majority of trainees have no idea which career they will follow.
Because in the absence of any commercial skills in IT, how could any of us be expected to understand what anyone doing a particular job actually does?
To get to the bottom of this, we need to discuss a number of definitive areas:
* Your personality can play an important part - what gets you ‘up and running’, and what are the activities that really turn you off.
* Are you hoping to get certified because of a particular motive - for example, do you aim to work at home (self-employment possibly?)?
* The income requirements you may have?
* Learning what the normal IT roles and markets are - and what differentiates them.
* How much time you’re prepared to spend on the training program.
Ultimately, the best way of checking this all out is via a meeting with a professional that knows the industry well enough to give you the information required.
Kick out the typical salesman that pushes one particular program without a decent chat to gain understanding of your current abilities and also your experience level. Always check they have access to a large array of training so they’re actually equipped to give you an appropriate solution.
Don’t forget, if you’ve got any qualifications that are related, then you will often be able to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone who is new to the field.
Where this will be your first attempt at studying for an IT examination then you should consider whether to start out with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first.
How the program is actually delivered to you isn’t always given the appropriate level of importance. How many stages do they break the program into? What is the order and at what speed is it delivered?
Delivery by courier of each element stage by stage, as you pass each exam is the usual method of releasing your program. This sounds sensible, but you might like to consider this:
Many students find that their training company’s standard order of study isn’t as suitable as another. It’s often the case that a slightly different order suits them better. Could it cause problems if you don’t get everything done in the allotted time?
Truth be told, the best solution is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but to receive all the materials up-front. You’re then in possession of everything should you not complete it at their required pace.

Get your CV updated straight-away though - look to your training company for advice on how to do this. Don’t put it off till you’ve finished your exams.
It’s possible that you won’t have even qualified when you will get your initial junior support role; yet this isn’t going to happen if interviewers don’t get sight of your CV.
Normally you’ll get quicker results from an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy than you’ll get from a training course provider’s centralised service, as they’ll know the area better.
In a nutshell, if you put as much hard work into landing your first job as into studying, you’re not likely to experience problems. A number of people bizarrely conscientiously work through their learning program and then call a halt once qualified and seem to suppose that interviewers know they’re there.
