Road Dates

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

It’s that time of year, when love is in the air and you get that warm and cozy feeling inside, no, not Spring, but something much more sinister then that. We are talking about Valentine’s Day. That dreaded time of year when men must do things like pick out cards and buy flowers and singles, well, they just get the raw end of the deal all together. That being said, the first thing you need to do is get your car in order. Let’s take a look at some good romantic cars.

Are first choice for car romance would be the great, anamorphic, Volkswagon Beetle Herbie, aptly called The Love Bug. The original Love Bug movie was filmed by Disney in 1968 and has produced a total of four movies (one in 2005 with Lindsay Lohan) a made for TV movie and even its own TV show. In theory, Herbie was called the Love Bug because he actively conspired to bring the movies lead actor into a romance with the lead actress. Funny, right? However, we think it is also because America as a whole fell in love with this car as the Love Bug movie was a smash hit in the box office. Is a VW Beetle romantic? More like cute, but it could work under the right circumstances.

How about a truck for romance? Before you laugh think about it. First of all, it is pretty common for a girl to sit in the middle seat, right next to her special somebody, and leave the passenger seat open. Sweet isn’t it? But there is more. If you clear the beer cans out of the back you can use it for some creative dating. Pack a picnic, some camping gear and using the trucks off road capabilities, head off into the mountains for a getaway. Best of all, lay in the back of the bed at night and watch the shooting stars cross the sky. Laugh now, but she will love it.

Maybe you want something less country. How about a motorcycle? It has attitude and an element of danger, and let’s face it, girls love that stuff. Best of all, if you ride it together, she has to put her arms around you and hold you tight. Not a bad deal at all.

For you old school romantic types how about a classic car? Sure they are probably pricey or it will take a lot of fixing up, but a classic Ford or Chevy from the 50’s practically screams “date me, I’m chivalrous.” A vintage Chevy Bel Air or Ford Thunderbird has class and nostalgic romance all rolled into one. Drive to the beach, get a burger and shake and watch the sun set. There you go, the car can only get you started, now it’s up to you.

Collectors Pour into Arizona

Friday, January 27th, 2012

It’ s been a crazy four days of shopping, dreaming and drooling over hundreds of amazing antique cars, at Scottsdale Auto Auction. Sadly it is finally wrapping up but with some amazing results. Over 200,000 visitors filed through the various auction houses on just the first two days. Numbers for the weekend are still being added.

Bids were placed, collectors jockeyed and positioned against each other to see just who was willing to go the furthest for the prizes they coveted the most. If the economy is struggling, there was no sign of it this weekend, with a grand total of 182 million in sales with 2,100 cars sold. That is pretty impressive by any means, but just you wait until you see the breakdown.

Perennial auto auction power house Barrett Jackson proved their dominance once again by taking the top spot with 90.9 million in total sales and 1,291 vehicles sold. Taking their top spot was a 1948 Tucker Torpedo which went for a mere 2.915 million dollars. This automobile was an advanced automobile created by Preston Tucker and produced in 1948. Only 51 of them were ever made and today only 47 still exist. Because there are so few of them, it is incredibly rare for them to go to auction, although fetching such a record price might entice a few current owners to put theirs up for sale.

Additionally a beautiful 1947 Bentley Franay Mark VI Cabriolet went for $2.75 million. This classic car is often considered the height of Bentley’s creations, this model is by far the most successful and expensive car they have manufactured. To see one for sale is also a rarity. Other sales included Mercedes, Packard and Duesenbergs.

However, top honors went to the fine folks over at Gooding & Co. who auctioned off a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing for $4.620 million. They did well in other areas as well, selling a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Coupe for $2.64 million and a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider for $3.905 million. Gooding & Co. finished the event with $39.8 million in total sales of 116 lots, not bad either.

Russo & Steele, another large company, sold 401 lots for $18.3 million as well. Not as much money wise, but they had a lot more muscle cars that tended to go for less. While that may not sound like much compared to some of the others, they still sold several cars that reached the 5-7 hundred thousand dollar mark.

All in all it was a great auction that showed a 25 million dollar increase in sales from the year before. It is also a great start to the auction year and shows that despite everything, there is still a lot of interest in these gorgeous machines.

All About NASCAR

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

When the automobile was invented it was only natural that people began racing them. Eventually organizations formed to oversee the races. In America there are two main racing institutes. One is the Formula 1, or F1 races under the care of the FIA, or Federation International de Automobile. It has it’s roots in Europe. It is a billion dollar industry, but its main popularity lies outside of the United States. The other group is NASCAR.

Somehow, despite all odds, NASCAR is huge in America. Every year people spend 3 billion dollars on NASCAR races and official merchandise. NASCAR racing is one of the highest rated television events, behind only football for watching popularity. It has 75 million fans and holds 17 of the top 20 attended single-day sporting events. People have favorite drivers, favorite cars and even favorite sponsors. Fans argue and debate endlessly over who is the best. Come to Memphis used car dealers for a great deal today.

NASCAR is an acronym for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. Unlike other sports, it is a family owned and operated business that was founded by Bill France Sr. in 1948. Today his grandson, Brian, is the CEO of the company. Come to Nashville used cars for a great deal today.

The races have come up with a rather unique system for determining the championship. Rather than winning each individual race they instead run a series of races. Each race every driver wins a number of points based on his finishing position in the race. At the end of the series the points are added up and the person with the most points wins.

They run three series of popular races as well as several smaller ones. The largest, most popular and most lucrative series is the Nextel Sprint Cup Series. It consists of 36 races over 10 months and has the most famous drivers. The Cup is now known as the Sprint cup, but from 1972-2003 it was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds and known as the Winston Cup. The Sprint Cup has had such famous drivers win such as Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and of course Dale Earnhardt.

The next second-highest level of races is the Nationwide Series. It started in 1982 and was originally sponsored by the Budweiser Brewing Company and known as the Busch Grand National Series. In 2007 Nationwide Insurance took over as the official sponsor. The money and prestige is significantly lower the Sprint Series but it still remains fairly popular. It is also the only series to race outside of the United States.

Lastly there is the Camping World Truck Series. It started in 1994 and sponsored by Craftsmen. Originally seen as “final tour” for senior NASCAR drivers, the last few years have seen it grow in popularity and has produced several Sprint drivers who never raced in the Nationwide series. At Cedar Rapids used cars you will be sure to find a huge selection you will love.

It is true that NASCAR is often made fun of and carries a certain reputation, but it has continually expanded its market and every year grows more and more in popularity. Something many other sports have failed to do.

Hot Wheels and Cold Steel

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

Hours after the first car was created, toy cars were produced. Every boy, and even most girls, own at least one toy car. While there are many brands and varieties, easily the most famous and recognizable name is Hot Wheels by Mattel. And if every little boy has a toy car, then that toy is a Hot Wheel.

Before 1967 Matchbox and Corgi had been the dominating die cast metal car toys for sale, but all of that changed when Hot Wheels was introduced by Mattel. Since then they have become highly collectible, with people traveling all over the country in search of them and spending thousands to get them. One particularly rare car known as the Beach Bomb Back Loader recently went for $70,000 dollars. Who knew your favorite childhood toy could be worth so much?

Mattel released the first set of 16 cars, often called the “sweet sixteen,” in 1968. They were an instant success as boys everywhere loved them. The cars looked cool and ran faster than their Matchbox counterparts due to a better wheel and axle assembly. Not only that, but Hot Wheels were designed to run, powered by gravity, on Hot Wheels tracks. Try used cars in Louisville for a huge selection you love.

Whole sets of tracks with loops, jumps, obstacle courses and numerous other accessories were created for kids to use with their Hot Wheels. Kids would put one end of the track on a table or elevated place, put the cars on the tracks, and gravity would do the rest. One of the more famous sets is the 1970 Mongoose & Snake Drag Race Set that has sold for $500 in good condition.

Much of Hot Wheels success is attributed to the meticulous detail that they give to each model and its production. The original Hot Wheels were all produced by actual car designers who had worked for the auto industry before coming to Mattel. Not only that, Mattel uses the actual blueprints that the car makers use to build their cars. Mattel has deals with General Motor, Ford, Chrysler, Ferrari, Mazda and even Toyota have all licensed Hot Wheels to make models of their cars. The car makers send their blue prints to Mattel, who study them intensively and create accurate 1:64 scale replicas of the cars. They then ship the blueprints back to the car makers. Hot Wheels has also created their own unique car designs over the years. Two of the more famous include the Twin Mill and Splittin’ Image, designed by the Hot Wheels legendary designer Ira Gifford. They have also come out with multiple series sets, some of the more notable of which are the Sizzlers, Treasure Hunt, and Pearl Driver series. Whatever the case may be, these little toy cars have become as iconic as the cars they were modeled after and in many cases more so.

More Toys for Boys

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

If you were a kid and didn’t have Hot Wheels (what’s wrong with you?) then you most certainly had a Matchbox car. The Matchbox name started as a brand name for the British owned die-cast toy manufacturer Lesney Products. Before Matchbox car there biggest sales success was a replica of Queen Elizabeth’s II coronation coach which sold a million models.

The modern Matchbox car was created in the 1950’s by Jack Odell. His daughter could only take toys to school that could fit into a matchbox. So it was he set out to design a car that could do just that and it wasn’t before long that the Matchbox cars came into existence. Their clever packaging and affordability made them an instant hit with kids everywhere. They were so popular that the term “Matchbox” became a catch phrase for all small cars of a similar type even to this day.

Lesney was founded by Jack Odell, Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith, who combined names to make Lesney. In the 1950’s British die cast toys were very popular, namely Dinky, Corgi and Matchbox. They each had their own niche markets and most of their products were successful. Among toy collectors this period is known as the “Golden Era” of British die cast toys.

The very first series of cars was called the 1-75. As time went by, Lesney attempted to expand their markets new series of cars. One of these was the Models of Yesteryear, a remake of classics from the early age of automobiles. Other additions were the Major Packs, large scale construction vehicles, and the King Sized series, which was a larger scale truck and tractor set. In 1968 Matchbox was at the top of its game and nobody else came close. That is until Mattel invented the Hot Wheels, with their revolutionary low friction, high speed “race” wheels. The Hot Wheels were painted bright, metallic colors and had fancy mag wheels on slick designs. It was a nightmare for Matchbox as their U.S. market collapsed.

Scrambling to come up with their own answer to Hot Wheels, Matchbox came out with the “Superfast” series and sold play sets as well. While these cars were in production, Matchbox redesigned their cars and retooled their machines to match the scale and width of Hot Wheels. By the early 1970’s they were back in business challenging the Hot Wheels supremacy

England was suffering from financial difficulties during the 1980’s and so Matchbox was sold to Universal Toys. In 1992 Universal was bought out by Tyco Toys, who continued to produce the cars. In 1997 disaster struck and Mattel bought out Tyco. There had always been a fierce competition between collectors of each brand and Matchbox fans feared Mattel would change the way they were made. However, Mattel had no intention of changing things and continues to produce Matchbox cars the way they have always been done. Much to collectors delight.

Tired Out

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

(We now continue with part 2 of our award winning series…”to fix a flat”…)

Be sure to leave room for the new tire when you jack up the car. Then you are ready for e hardest part: Taking of the lug nuts. There are a couple types of lug wrenches, grab whichever you have. One has one socket, another one has four. The four way wrench is the best, because you may not know what sized socket you need plus the 4 way provides great leverage when taking of the nuts.

You usually have five lug nuts. Place the socket onto a lug nut and turn it counter clock wise. This is by far the most difficult part. The nuts can be on really tight and it can take a good bit of strength to loosen them. If they were put on by an electric wrench they can be very difficult to turn. Other factors, such as cold weather, can make them tighter as well.

You don’t want to put too much pressure on the screws so loosen a nut but do not take it all the way off. Just loosen it just enough to release some pressure so that it turns easily. Now move to the opposite screw across from the one you just did. Loosen it like the other. Then move across to another one and loosen it. Keep going back and forth loosening them all until they are all done. Now you can finish unscrewing them all the way.

Take all the nuts off. It is VERY important to keep track of where all the nuts are. They can be easy to lose and you need them all for the spare. Pull the flat tire off and set it somewhere to the side for now. Take the spare tire and line it up with the screws. The holes should be facing inwards, not outwards. Slide the spare onto the screws.

Now you will put the nuts back on the same way you took them off. Screw one on till there is a slight bit of pressure on the tire. Then place the nut across from it on and turn until there is pressure as well, then the next across from it. Keep going until all the nuts are on but not tight. Now you can tighten them.

Tighten them as much as you can with the wrench and go back over them again to make sure they are on good. You definitely don’t want them coming loose while driving. Once you are sure they are tight enough. Make sure nothing is under the car and release the handle on the jack or crank it in the opposite direction to lower it. Put all of your stuff back in the truck. When you get in your car don’t forget to turn off your hazards and remember to RELEASE the emergency break as well. Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Car hood covers are not that uncommon and are probably what most people have seen in the past. The exterior hoods protect against road hazards, as well as any damage your car could potentially incur while parked outdoors.

Did you know that you should also be mindful about protecting your car’s exterior while it’s parked in an enclosed space like a garage, though? That’s right. Even in your very own garage, your car could be exposed to elements that affect the outside integrity of its paint job, for example. And an indoor car cover is just what you need to keep your car’s exterior safe when it’s not in use.

Even when parked in the presumed safety of a garage or storage unit, your car’s exterior can be easily damaged. While your car is not in use, dust and dirt can collect. How Seat Covers Can Be a Lifesaver For Your Vehicle

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

One of a car owner’s biggest concerns is how to keep their car looking great after they purchase it and start driving it around. There are certainly a lot of hazards associated with driving and parking your car outside. That people focus almost exclusively on maintaining their car’s exterior is a logical assumption then. You need to look at this issue from another side though.

The exterior might be what most owners and car admirers focus on, but you should also consider how you plan to keep your car’s interior clean too. Car owners are the primary observers of what goes on within a car’s interior and how it ultimately looks. Regular commuters probably already know about the myriad of messes that can be made within a car’s interior.

If you enjoy coffee, for example, what is the likelihood that you’ll be able to go through every single morning without managing to spill it on a car seat, even if it’s just a drop or two? Probably not high, especially if you’re rushing. At the same time, if you ever go out to grab fast food on the rush, you’ll likely end up needing to dump the remains of your on-the-go lunch onto the backseat in lieu of actually throwing it out immediately. Grease can soak through paper bags like they’re tissue paper. Guess where it’ll end up if you’ve just thrown it onto the backseat of your car?

To combat such problems, car seat covers are consequently a good option. They might be just the thing to ensure your actual seat covers remain unblemished, since they’re made of a variety of different fabrics and are able to withstand a lot of wear and tear. Since it’s a lot easier simply to strip off a dirty seat cover than to have your car reupholstered, this is important for resale purposes in the future. Seat covers are definitely for you if you’ve got eclectic tastes as well. Polka dots and even zebra stripes are just some of your pattern options with car seat covers. The decision is entirely yours.

So, consider just how much less it would cost you in time and effort to clean your seats if they’ve already been covered up the next time you consider grabbing coffee or some fast food for lunch. You can’t really go wrong with car seat covers for someone with an on-the-go lifestyle.
