How To Remove Bed Bugs From Your Clothes

Bed bugs used to be a part of eveyone’s daily life before the Second World War - or should that be ‘a part of everyone’s nocturnal life’? For hundreds of years, people just grinned and bore it; they had to because there were no effectual methods of getting rid of them.

They lived in the stored clothes, the furniture, the bedding and the houses of the rich and poor alike and because houses were located so close together, families were larger and people were in and out of each others houses, you could not eradicate a bed bug infestation for long.

Then came the bombing of European cities in the Second World War 1939-1945 and many inner cities were unsafe, so the authorities decided to take the opportunity to flatten the inner city slums and begin again. A similar programme was started in America, but not because of bombing.

The authorities pulled down hundreds of millions of houses and made billions of rats, mice, bed bugs, fleas and other nasties homeless. In fact, rat poison and a new miracle pesticide, DDT, were used widely in the clean up. By the end of the Forties or during the Fifties, bed bugs were just about eradicated from the Western World.

The Baby Boomer generation was the first one never to have been troubled by bed bugs. This joyful situation lasted until the mid-Nineties, when increased long haul travel and increased immigration allowed bed bugs to hitch lifts back to the West. These unwelcome hitch hikers mostly returned on garments that had been packed away in suitcases.

And so here we are today, in a state of affairs where the West’s major inner cities have a bed bug issue of epidemic proportions. Bed bugs are being passed around from person to person on all forms of public transport but especially buses, trains and taxis and anywhere where individuals congregate, but especially hotels, cinemas and waiting rooms.

So, here are a few tips on how to avoid infesting your home with bed bugs. If you stay in hotels a few nights or one night at a time, merely unpack what you need to at any one time. In other words, live out of your suitcase.

If you are on a longer vacation, by all means, unpack everything, but keep your suitcase closed and have all your clothes boil washed, dry cleaned or tumble-dried on ‘HOT’ before you repack them to go home.

If this cannot be done because of the sort of fabric, inspect all the seams, hems, pockets, cuffs and collars and blow them with the hair-dryer on ‘HOT’. The hair-dryer is not quite as effective, but all stages of a bed bug’s life cycle are killed by seven minutes exposure to temperatures above 45C or 115F.

If you cannot heat-treat your clothes before you leave the hotel, seal them up in plastic bags and treat them when you arrive home - preferably in a laundrette or dry cleaners.

What do you do about your overcoat, if you mix with others every day on the bus or at work? This is a tough one. Bed bugs are resistant to all forms of insect killer, which is why we are experiencing this epidemic, so you will literally have to inspect your overcoat every time you come home or buy one that you can put in the tumble-dryer each night.

One bed bug can lay 300 eggs and last for a year without feeding, so you cannot know that you have not got bed bugs, you can only say that you have not seen any - yet.

Bedbugs were almost totally eliminated in western Europe, the United States and Canada in the 1950’s, yet have been reappearing in ever larger numbers since about 1995. It is supposed that this is due to more frequent foreign vacations and increased immigration..

You see, bedbugs travel around by hitching a lift on people’s clothing and then jumping off when it gets quiet and warm enough again. The poor little creatures are actually quite shy, you know, which is why you could have a growing family of them in your house long before you become bitten. And bedbugs can go for six months without feeding.

Bedbugs are small, usually brownish beetles that look a bit banded, because of the hairs on their back. They have a long pointy beak for sucking blood and can move astonishingly quickly if disturbed. Some Individuals say that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, but this just applies to those of us with very poor eyesight. A bedbug is about the size, colour and shape or an apple pip on legs.

In fact, you may never see a bedbug in your room, but you might see remnants of its activity. So, examine your clothing, particularly under the collar and in the pockets. The only surefire manner of killing bedbugs is the use of heat, so if you find one on your coat, put your garments in the tumble dryer on full heat to kill the bedbug, its friends and its eggs.

Then look around your bedroom and decide on what you can keep. Move the remainder of the stuff to other bedrooms, sell it or give it away. Once you have chosen your colours and fabrics, you can either begin redecorating yourself or call someone like I was in to do it for you.

Whilst you are deciding on your bedroom furniture, make sure that you provide a lot of space for you to hang your clothes up and put your stuff away. There is nothing that makes a bedroom look more untidy than clothes, laundered and unlaundered lying everywhere. If you have a tendency to just throw your used clothes off on to a chair, put a big laundry basket or box somewhere convenient.

It is the same with shoes, bags, briefcases, lunch boxes, umbrellas and all the rest of the paraphernalia: have somewhere to put it, if at all possible behind a door. If you have to have a computer in your bedroom, so be it, but you could get a beautiful, carved hardwood screen to place in front to it.

If you do not need a new mattress, you could make your existing one more sumptuous with a mattress topper or even a memory foam mattress topper. Cover your bed with a beautiful eiderdown or put your duvet in a beautiful duvet cover and position half a dozen stylish throw cushions on the bed. Do not forget to colour co-ordinate the curtains too.

Charity Stores And Wardrobe Clear Outs

One way of dividing up people that crosses the barriers of age, sex, religion and ethnicity is whether you are a hoarder or not. There are a lot of hoarders, although some hoarders refer to themselves as collectors or just nostalgic.

That last sentence might be a tad unfair. Collecting can be explained away as a hobby and nostalgia can be thought of as a yearning for days when we were in better shape.

However, what it all boils down to for billions of households is the accumulation of old junk and old clothing. My mother and her mother had decades of clothes that they were sure would come back into fashion one day.

They were almost certainly right and it probably did, but they had to look after the stuff for twenty or thirty years and then teenagers were wearing it, not middle-aged mothers and grandmothers.

My point is that we should clear out our closets and wardrobes more frequently in order to create space and pass things on to people who can use them now rather than in twenty years time. I think that closets should be gone through once or twice a year.

Apart from seasonal stuff, if you have not worn something for months, there must be a good reason. Either you do not like it any more; you have gained weight or it does not suit you. So why not pass it on? Write it off and let someone else benefit from it before the moths do.

You could donate them to the Salvation Army, Shelter or any other charity shop or wait for your local church, school or scout brigade to hold a fund-raising bazaar or bring-and-buy sale.

This clears out room for you so that you can see the wood for the trees, allows a charity to profit from your surplus and allows someone more needy than you to get decent quality clothing at less than the retail cost.

If you have let spring cleaning drift a little, not to worry. There are charity shops that have racks specializing in old-fashioned gear. They call it retro and there are loads of people who enjoy wearing it.

There are also theatre and film companies scouring the secondhand clothes stores looking for period clothing. One of your old suits could feature in the next Fifties remake!

However, passing your old, good quality clothing on to charity stores or specialist retro shops, whether you donate or sell them, is merely one side of the coin. You can also purchase from these stores.

If you have not been in a charity shop for years or think that you would not be seen dead in one, then you should go along and have a look. They are no longer the sad, amateurish places that they once were. They are run professionally and have a decent turnover of stock. They are an especially good source of warm winter clothing such as overcoats, so why not do everyone a favour and go and have a look sometime soon?

How To Organize Your Cloakroom

Most people have some type of arrangement near the main entrance to their house, mostly the front door, for storing residents’ and visitors’ coats. Some houses have a simple row of hooks in the hall, whereas others have a dedicated coat closet or cloakroom.

Furthermore, most of these spaces are fairly chaotic with coats heaped on top of other coats which are heaped on top of other coats that no-one has worn for years.

You ought to apply the same rules to organizing this area, let’s call it a cloakroom for easy reference, as you do to your bedroom closets or wardrobes. The trick is that everything should have a place and everything must be in that place, which means that you and all the family or all the household have to be aware of the rules.

It simply does not make for a tidy cloakroom if some folk stick to the rules whilst others do what they want. Let’s take an average family or household of four as another norm. Four people like this will own a coat or two each, a jacket, perhaps an umbrella and a number of pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers maybe.

You could install a shoe rack so that each person can store, say, three pairs of shoes each in the cloakroom. If your shoe rack has four levels then three pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers per person. Everything else has to be stored either in the bedroom or the garage.
