3 Recipes With Cantaloupe

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

The variety of melons known as muskmelons consists of a juicy, edible fruit that is characterized by its round shape and a ribbed exterior. Cantaloupes are a variety of muskmelons..

Extensive variation occurs in this fruit. Some cantaloupes are large yet others are small; some have pink or yellow flesh yet others have white or light-green flesh. The flesh of these fruits contains a large amount of water; therefore, their food value is not high, being only a little over half as much as that of apples.

If melons suitable for the table are desired, they should be selected with care. To be just at the correct stage, the blossom end of the melon ought to be a little soft when pressed with the fingers. If it is very soft, the melon is perhaps over ripe; yet if it does not give with pressure, the melon is still young.

Various ways of serving cantaloupes exist. If they are to be served plain as a breakfast food or a lunch dessert, cut them crosswise into halves, or, if they are big, divide them into sections lengthwise.

With the melons cut in the desired way, remove all the seeds but keep the melons on ice until they are to be served. The pulp of the melon may also be cut from the rind yet then diced and used in the making of fruit salads.

Again, the pulp can be partly scraped out of the melon and the rinds then filled with fruit mixtures and served with a salad dressing for a salad or with fruit juices for a cocktail. The pulp that is scraped out can be diced and used in the fruit mixture.

Recipe 1

FRUIT IN CANTALOUPE SHELLS

During cantaloupe season, a delightful fruit salad can be made by combining a number of different kinds of fruit with the flesh of cantaloupe and serving the mixture in the cantaloupe shells. Such a salad is an excellent one to serve when light refreshments are desired or when something unusual is required for a light lunch.

Cut cantaloupes in half crosswise, and, using the French cutter, cut some of the meat into round balls. Dice the remainder yet mix with any blend of fruit desired. Place this in the cantaloupe shells after cutting points in the top edge. Garnish with the balls cut from the cantaloupe and serve with any desired dressing. You can also sprinkle nuts on top to add a variation of textures.

Recipe 2

FRESH FRUIT COMPOTE

1 cup fresh blueberries 1 cup fresh strawberries, halved 1 cup sliced fresh peaches, peeled 1 cup fresh blackberries or raspberries 1 cup watermelon balls 1 cup cantaloupe balls 1 cup seedless grapes 1/2 cup sparkling wine (or sweet) wine, chilled 2 tbs thawed orange juice, frozen, concentrated, undiluted

Mix together all of the fruit in a large glass or ceramic bowl then gently stir to mix. Add the orange juice and wine and lightly stir again. Chill with a wrapping on it for at least 20 minutes. Mix again gently before serving.

Recipe 3

ERDBEER BOWLE (Strawberry Wine Punch)

1/2 pt strawberries, stemless, rinsed, cut in half 1 tbs granulated sugar 1/2 bottle German Riesling, well chilled 1 tbs brandy (preferably Alsbach Uralt) 1/2 bottle German Sekt well chilled

Bowle is a typical German party wine punch. During the month of May, throughout Germany, bowle is served flavoured with fresh woodruff (Waldmeister), a sweet scented herb with white flowers, which grows particularly well in wooded yet shady areas away from hot sun. Later, during strawberry season, bowle is made with strawberries which grow abundantly everywhere. As German summer season progresses, bowle is willing with other fruits like peaches, chunks of juicy watermelon, cubes of bright orange cantaloupe, or plump raspberries.

Put the strawberries in a substantial covered glass jar (a sun tea jar is fine), sprinkle them with sugar and drizzle them with the brandy. Put them aside to marinate for two hours to allow the sugar to draw out the juice from the berries.

Add white wine, stir, and set aside for two further hours. When finished to serve, pour into a punch bowl. Add Sekt then serve chilled in wide champagne type glasses, making sure to dispense strawberries with the wine.

The Effects Of Prolonged Hyperglycemia

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

The rate of diabetes is on the increase and has been for years not only in the West but in many countries is other parts of the world too. This has been linked to the growing incidence of obesity which in turn has been linked to various factors.

There are several ideas why the number of obese people is raising, the most common of which are elevated prosperity, deskbound jobs, sedentary lifestyle (far too much TV); poor diet (far too much junk food) and food additives.

A sedentary job and lifestyle ultimately frequently leads to a deficiency of exercise and a poor diet is usually the result of not being able to cook either because of a lack of time or ability. Junk food fills the gap.

Therefore, two of the main reasons for of diabetes in later life are poor diet and shortage of exercise, which can often be distilled to one major cause: indolence. Can’t be bothered to cook or learn how to and would rather watch a film than go for a stroll.

This is not every diabetic’s reason for being ill, obviously. There are also genetic dispositions and organ failures, but Type II diabetes is associated with obesity which is attaining epidemic proportions.

However, despite the high numbers of diabetics, there is also a pre-diabetic state. This pre-diabetic state is when the blood- sugar levels are greater than standard, but are not life-threatening. This again is most prevalent in the overweight.

A person in the pre-diabetic state will not notice anything, because a doctor needs to do check ups to determine the condition. People can go for years and even decades in this condition with no apparent injury.

However, elevated blood-sugar levels do have damaging side effects. If you are in this condition, it is necessary to correct the condition of your blood in order to reduce your chances of becoming diabetic. The condition of having too much sugar or glucose in the blood is called ‘hyperglycaemia’.

Some of the most common symptoms of hyperglycaemia are: kidney damage; intestinal worries; poor circulation in the extremities (so particularly the feet), which may produce sensations of tingling or coldness and sight damage (especially cataracts).

The problem for many people is that you have to work closely with your physician to bring your blood-sugar levels back under control. For those who live in remote locations or have little money this may be a big difficulty.

There are self-testing kits and medication for those who are able and willing to use them and they are much more preferable than having to inject with insulin everyday if you let the situation get too far out of hand. Being pre-diabetic is a loud call to action.

Exercise and a good diet of home-cooked food is the combination that will go a long way to improving the state of your blood. It is necessary to consume slow-burning foodstuffs like (meat and) vegetables rather than fast-burning sugary foodstuffs and it is vital to remove the excess sugar in your blood, if your internal organs cannot regulate it, by burning it off, which is best achieved by physical activity.

Diabetes And Expectant Mothers

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Although pregnancy is a totally natural and everyday procedure for women, there is no doubt that it imposes both mental and physical stresses and strains on the person involved.

Pregnant mothers worry about whether the baby is well and whether they are doing all they could to give their baby every opportunity to do well.

This is normal for normal, healthy women, so how much more worrying and how much more problematic must pregnancy be for diabetic women? Firstly, the diabetic mother-to-be has to make sure that she is ‘normal’ and then worry like any ‘normal’ mother. This could add up to lots of extra pressure.

Nutrition, so diet, and exercise are the real keys to success here. I do not mean dieting to lose weight either. During pregnancy is not the ideal time to attempt to lose weight!

Rather, the pregnant diabetic has to eat sensibly and follow all the doctor’s advice on what to eat in order to encourage the correct development of the baby.

Most people talk of two variations of diabetes: Type I or juvenile diabetes and Type II or on-set diabetes in those who develop it later in life. However, there is a third, which just pregnant women can get.

It most frequently manifests itself in the last third of the pregnancy and is not at all uncommon. In fact, The USA is the sole major country that calls it a disease.

It is known as gestational diabetes and some medical professionals think that it is a fairly normal part of pregnancy, although it can become exaggerated in some women. Around 3%-10% of pregnant women get gestational diabetes, depending on the population being monitored.

It can be easily treated in most cases, but must be treated, because it can have an effect on the baby and can have longer term complications for the mother. Usually, the indications of diabetes disappear after giving birth. It may however lead to type II diabetes if not treated.

Pregnancy for women who were diabetic before they became pregnant may become more of a problem and should be monitored more closely because of the continuous state of flux of hormones that pregnancy causes. Insulin is also a hormone, of course.

This does not mean that there will be problems, just that it is safer to be more cautious than usual. If the pregnancy was unexpected, there is nothing to be done, but being cautious, but if a pregnancy is planned, then the woman ought to get her body in the best possible shape before attempting to conceive.

This involves normalizing your weight and blood and being comfortable with the techniques that a diabetic has to get used to. If you are comfortable with your predicament, you will have that much less to worry about when pregnant.

It may be difficult for a non-professional to know whether a diabetic woman is ready to take on a pregnancy, so a visit to a physician is recommended.

There are risks for diabetic women who get pregnant. The worst of these worries are: diabetic retinopathy, hypertension, kidney disease, autonomic neuropathy or nerve damage to the internal organs, and cardiovascular problems.

The risks can be reduced by frequent self-monitoring; medication; exercise and diet.

Factors For Hair Loss

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Hair loss is one of the biggest causes of loss of self-confidence among people of both sexes and most of us would leap at any opportunity to avert their loss of hair. This has given birth to a colossal industry offering hair loss medicines, most of which are bogus, which is why there is a healthy scepticism about hair loss products.

The fact is that hair loss basically comes from two causes: heredity and illness.Nobody can do anything about their heredity and a GP is the best person to talk to about illness. However, there are very minor conditions of the scalp that hairdressers are able to cope with such as dryness and dandruff.

The first indications that you are having problems with alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, are dandruff and dry, brittle hair. The problem is confirmed when you begin losing over 100 hairs a day. However, you may like to try to sort these minor symptoms out yourself with shampoo for dry hair or dandruff and hair tonic.

Rapid hair loss is occasionally a sign of a more serious illness, so it is important to go to the physician for a general check up. It is unlikely that the check up will expose a serious infection like diabetes, lupus or thyroid problems, but these can be factors for alopecia, so it is worth eliminating them as the factors as soon as you can.

If it is not an illness that is causing your hair loss, it could be a medication that you are taking for an unrelated condition. If you check with your medical doctor, she can prescribe another medication in its place.

The difficulty might be being caused by over-the-counter medicines. For example, slimming pills, anti-depressants and pain killers may be causing the problem.

The use of recreational drugs can also cause hair loss, particularly those that could contain amphetamine such as speed, cocaine, crack and ecstasy.

Although some of these drugs do not naturally contain amphetamines, they are frequently cut with them. In some countries, tablets to help you stay awake longer (uppers) may also contain amphetamine of one sort or another.

Your diet can also be a cause of hair loss. Your body needs specific vitamins and nutrients to be able to carry out precise functions, so if your diet is not providing these things, then something will suffer. Malnutrition is a major cause of hair loss in some countries. A poor diet is often the cause of hair loss among women.

If food is scarce, many mothers will deprive themselves in favour of their children, but women who would like to lose weight are also at risk. Fad diets are a major cause of undernourishment in the developed world, however, novice vegetarians and vegans, who do not completely understand how to replace meat in their diet may also have problems until they learn more about vegetarianism or veganism.

Hormonal changes can also have an effect on the condition of the hair in both men and women. Hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) can affect women’s hair for the better or the worse, so middle-aged women should monitor their hair loss on a quite regular basis.

The Complications Of Diabetes

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes or that you are in a pre-diabetic state, it is very disconcerting. Everything is new to you and you have heard horror stories about diabetes. Well, those horror stories are true for people who cannot afford medication or who do not take the illness seriously.

Organ failure, blindness and amputations are the traditional result of diabetes unless it is treated. The first step after being warned of the disease is to learn as much concerning it as possible.

What it may do to you; how you can recognize the indications and what you can do to avoid the natural consequences of being diabetic. The consequences that have befallen diabetics for thousands of years.

It takes more thought, preparation and work to live with a disease than it does to live without one. That is logical, but your life alters when you are given the information and you have to decide whether to fight it or roll over.

‘Fighting it’ often involves no more than living sensibly, perhaps for the first time in your life. It means taking the time to eat sensibly and not grab a candy bar or junk food. It may even mean learning to cook sensibly, if you never bothered before.

It will mean re-evaluating your life and deciding whether you want to carry on. However, if you decide to ‘carry on’, your old lifestyle will be closed to you, because that would mean certain death.

If you choose ‘life’, then it means a modification of lifestyle and that ‘new’ lifestyle is close to what you ought to have been living all your life, which is fairly ironic.

It will have taken you getting a life-threatening disease to do what you should have been doing anyway.

However, you will end up healthier than you were, which sounds ironic as well. In short, your illness, diabetes (mellitus) will force you to live a healthy life or die. This is the body’s ultimate way of having its own way.

Ultimately, people do not die of diabetes. It is comparable to AIDS in that respect - people do not die of AIDS. They die in both cases of complications caused by or as a result of diabetes or AIDS.

Some of these complications are:

Heart disease and stroke: diabetics have more chance of heart disease and a stroke because their blood, if unregulated, is thicker (with the extra sugar/glucose) and does not penetrate into the smaller blood vessels.

Kidney disease is a major hazard, but one which can be avoided, like most other health issues.

Sight issues, like cataracts are very common in cases of untreated diabetes. Numerous diabetics used to go blind as a matter of course.

Amputations were quite common too, because the thick blood cannot reach the extremities which tend to have narrower blood vessels, They die, resulting in gangrene.

All of these complications can be avoided by doing what your physiciantells you, even though lifestyle alterations are the most difficult to implement

Bicycle Tune Up Tips

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

All bikes require attention at some time whether you use it frequently or not. If you do not use it, it almost certainly requirements more attention than if you do, but if you do use your bicycle a lot some aspects will require attention as well. In this article we will discuss some bicycle tune up tips that ought to placed you ahead of the competition.

The first thing to check is the chain. If the chain is not correct, it will not transfer all your leg power to the wheels - it will be inefficient and you will have to work harder. Not only that, but if the chain is not correct, it can wear down the teeth on the cogs and they are far dearer to replace than the chain.

So, test the tension of the chain by moving it up and down from its normal place. It should move around a centimeter (less than half an inch) up and down from standard. If it is over this, slacken the wheel nuts off and tap the wheel back to increase the chain tension. If the wheel will not go back far enough, you need a new chain. Chains do stretch over time.

Next, assess the bearings in the pedal mechanism. Do this with the chain off to reduce ambient noise. Turn the pedal arms and wiggle each one from side to side. Listen and feel for friction. The arms ought to not move from side to side at all, although the pedals may.

If the bearings are merely dry, shame on you, oil them, but if you have let it go too far and some bearings are damaged, replace them.

Take the wheels off and holding each one in turn by its spindle, spin them. Listen to the bearings in the hubs. Do they sound all right? Oil or replace the bearings. With the wheels in place, place the front wheel between your legs and hold it firm between your knees. Rock the handlebars from left to correct and back again a couple of times. Is there any play? If so, tighten the locking nut, oil the bearings or replace them.

Examine your brake handles and cables. Replace anything that is cracked, broken or showing signs of rust. Check your brake pads. If they are worn out of shape, replace them and fit new ones so that they will wear more evenly.

If the pads are deformed then they were not installed properly so your brakes were not working well for a time which means that you were lucky that you did not require them in an emergency situation.

When the brake pads have been fitted properly, recheck the tension of the cables operating them. Tighten or slacken them as needed.

If you are still growing, check the height of the saddle and raise it if needed. If you have stopped growing upwards, check that the saddle nut is tight enough to keep the saddle in place even if you hit a pothole.

Last but not least, make certain that your lights and reflector are working.

Wrinkle Cream For The Eyes

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Most people find that the first sign of aging is thin lines around the eyes. If these project sideways from the outer corners of the eyes, they are referred to as “crows’ feet”. It the first sign people look to when trying to assess someone’s age. Therefore, it is the first place that people who would like to conceal their age turn their attention to.

The skin about the eyes is some of the thinnest and most delicate that we have and so it does have a problem retaining moisture. This is why most individuals who use moisturizer begin applying moisturizer to the skin around the eyes first - often quite young in life, well before their skin actually needs it, in the hope that their skin will appreciate the help by never revealing its true age.

However, you can not just put any old cream on your face and hope for the best, so here are a few tips to help make your selection of anti-wrinkle cream successful.

The first thing to comprehend is that no manufacturer of anti-wrinkle cream is going to tell you the whole truth. They all use cunning words to cover up the truth. Anti-wrinkle cream is not like paint, you cannot have faith in what you read on the tin. So, you will have to go by personal recommendation and trial and error.

Give a cream a couple of weeks or until the first pot runs out and if there is no improvement, move on. What works for your friend might not work for you, there being a number of kinds of skin.

Do you in fact know your skin sort? Have you ever had it analyzed? If, not this is a good place to begin. Once you know the skin sort you have about your eyes, you can eliminate at least two-thirds of the creams on the supermarket shelves.

Most honest experts on skin aging will tell you that the biggest enemy of smooth skin is the sun. Therefore, you ought to apply a moisturizing sunscreen around the eyes from an early age. If the skin around your eyes is super-sensitive or you are allergic to creams, you should always wear a wide-brimmed hat or at least avoid going out in the sun whilst it is at its hottest, say, between 10 AM and 4 PM. and wear sunglasses that will block out the UV rays.

Applying antioxidants to the outside and the inside of the skin will help too. It is at least as important what you drink as what you rub in. Drinking alcohol and smoking are known to dry out the skin. Avoid diuretics like coffee as well. Diuretics cause you to lose more water than you take in with it, so for instance, drinking a cup of coffee might cause you to lose a coffee cup and a quarter of bodily fluids.

Your skin needs plenty of moisture, you can help it by applying it from the outside, but you can also help it by drinking lots of water, which will also help your body flush out toxins - a double whammy!

Dental Concerns For Diabetics

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

The foremost difficulty for diabetics is not the lack of insulin, it is the result of the deficiency of insulin and that result is that the blood becomes ultra-saturated with sugar (or glucose).

Everyone’s blood has sugar in it, the blood carries this energy to the limbs and organs to keep them working, but there is a fine balance between enough and too much.

Insulin regulates that balance, so if you do not make enough insulin, as diabetics do not, your blood becomes dense and sugary. That does not sound too bad on the face of it.

Maybe a diabetic ought to be able to run further and faster than normal with all that extra energy being pumped about the body.

Unfortunately, it does not work like that. The dense, syrupy blood does not pass into the fine veins and capillaries, which causes a lack of energy in these places, which are frequently at the very ends of your body and in internal and external organs.

Skin, hair, eyes, teeth and toes are all starved of the sugars they need to keep them alive, not merely to keep them super-fit. The places with the finest blood vessels start to suffer first.

Not only that, but where the blood does reach can become more easily infected, because the bacteria think it is party time with all that extra food/energy in the blood.

A small infection that the body;s immune system could usually have dealt with in a day or two soon gets out of hand. This is a major problem for diabetics and one of the areas that is easily infected is the mouth.

Without the regular dental check-ups that affluent people can afford, the mouth would often be infected, as it still is in poorer countries and among poorer classes in rich countries. Children and older people are always requiring fillings, extractions and infections sorted out.

For diabetics who do not seek appropriate dental care this may soon be a major difficulty. Smoking exacerbates the difficulty. The problems truly start to mount up for smokers over the age of 45 when dental concerns normally start to resurface after 20 odd years of relatively healthy teeth and gums.

Periodontitis is especially perilous for diabetics. Periodontitis is an infection that affects the bones and gums in the mouth. It manifests itself in receding, bleeding gums. This exposes the blood rich in sugars to infection. Diabetics should inform their dentist of their condition and go for a check-up every six months.

Diabetics can easily lose all their teeth if they get periodontitis and it is readily done with high blood sugar levels. The first sign of such dental issues is bleeding teeth or gums.

It is imperative to regulate the blood sugar level to as close to normal as you can to avoid these and other complications and the two first keys to use are diet and exercise, otherwise you may have to resort to medication.
