Pet Friendly Rentals

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

The majority of people really love their pets, to the point where they become part of the family. Some pet owners cannot bear to be parted from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on holiday can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Clearly the answer is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a few days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the location of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is often the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some want you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels tend not to be very pet-friendly.

If you propose taking your pet with you, it is better if you make this clear when you make your booking as more hotels do not allow pets than do allow them. Normally there is no extra charge for a pet, but you are responsible for any extra cleaning bills, should your pet get caught short.

If you are going away on holiday or for a longer period of time, it is usually a lot easier to find a holiday rental that will allow you to take your cat or dog with you. Again, it is wisest to make it obvious at booking that you want to take your dog with you. Luckily, there are about fifty percent of rentals or more that will permit this, although once again, you will be held responsible for any damage or mess caused by your dog.

A tip: if on getting there, you see that previous pets have caused some damage or stains, take photographs on your first day and have them dated. Modern cameras often have the facility to date stamp photos or you can use a newspaper. Otherwise, point out the damage to your host.

When you travel with your dog, it is best to put the animal in some sort of a cage particularly when driving. A loving dog can be a diversion in a car. If it wants attention just when you are trying to perform a complicated manouevre, it can cause an accident. Some dogs get very frightened in cars and want to sit on their owner’s lap, this is also not a good idea and could lead to a charge of dangerous driving. Additionally, if your dog is not caged and you have an accident, it could be thrown through the windscreen. If you are travelling by air, then the airline will insist on a cage, but they usually have their own.

Once you arrive at your pet-friendly rental, give your dog some of his regular food to eat, lay out his blanket from home, and put out one of his favourite toys, just to help make him feel at home. After all, everything will be strange to him and he might be able to smell the previous furry tenant. If cleaning staff will be going into your rental during your vacation, make sure that you are there at least for the first few times they call.

Picturesque Inland Beach Cottage Rentals

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a two week’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, azure sea.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these places precisely because they are full of activity. They like the crowds and the night clubs that attract them. Mainly singles go to these types of destinations and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may prefer a little less noise, pollution and bustle. However, there are beaches which meet these requirements too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not often have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are virtually always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is instinctively connected with the sea. However, this need not inevitably be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Accommodation can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are simply not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially viable, but some of them have cottage rentals instead. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be difficult to find if you do not reserve early enough. They are usually complete homes, fully equipped with all the household facilities you have grown used to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a modern kitchen.

Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are usually situated right on the water’s edge. This makes the bit of beach right before your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.

In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good idea to check photos of the cottage before you make a booking.

If an inland beach cottage rental sounds right for you, there are thousands to pick from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly beautiful place to go. There are excellent spots in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

You will not regret going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every pocket and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more probable that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather rent a boat.

What Is The Low Down On Bed Bugs?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Most people under seventy years of age in the West will not have seen bed bugs. This is mainly due to enhanced living conditions, DDT and better public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and eradicated the problem in the more wealthy countries.

Bed bugs are a member of the arachnid or spider family, although bed bugs are parasites that suck blood, not all bodily fluids. They will feed on most warm-blooded animals and there is some proof that humans are not their first preference of prey.

The most common form of bed bugs are known as Cimex lectularius by their Latin name. They are quite small but very fast moving insects and they are members of the spider family, although many of them do not look like spiders at all. Rather, most of them look like little beetles, until they have satiated themselves, after which they can hardly move and are at their most vulnerable.

Bed bugs feed in a similar way to mosquitoes. They insert a tube into the skin of its victim and suck blood out. It is not a great deal to you, about a quarter of a millilitre, but is a lot to them. It allows them to live and procreate.

Bed bugs, unlike their relatives the ticks, are not known to convey any diseases. In fact, they are one of the few insects that do not pass on a disease.

A bedbug bite is similar to an ant bite in appearance, but it will itch like a mosquito bite. You will probably experience a slight swelling with a red dot in the centre and an itch. Not much more.

You can check for bed bugs quite easily by soaking a bar of soap in a little water for half an hour while you lie on your bed reading a book. Then get up and fetch the soap, wet-side down and fling back the bed clothes. Dab up the bed bugs, if there are any with the soft soap. This is a fast way of getting rid of a small number of bed bugs, but cannot be considered as a solution.

With regards to the annihilation of an infestation of bed bugs, it depends where you are. If you are in a hotel, the bar of soap will be proof enough of a problem and it is the hotel manager’s duty to provide a solution. If they do nothing, report the hotel to the local tourist bureau.

If you live in rented accommodation, it is your landlord’s responsibility to solve the predicament. If he or she is disinclined, then go to the council hall and seek advice.

If the issue is in your own house, then take the skirting boards and architraves off. Spray or paint very powerful insecticide onto the wall and refit the woodwork. If you are still worried, seal the woodwork off on all sides with mastic or silicone.

These actions will ensure that your house will be free of bed bugs.

A Short History Of Christianity

Friday, June 17th, 2011

The majority of Christians believe that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Israel, the son of Jewish parents, Mary and Joseph, a carpenter, who had travelled from Nazareth to pay their annual taxes. Mary gave birth, so the story goes, on the 25th December in a stables and Christian countries mark that as the beginning of their calendar, in a similar manner that Buddhists and Muslims mark the birth of their spiritual leaders as the beginning of their calendars.

However, not very much is really known of Jesus and nothing is known of him from his own hand. The nearest we can get to him are books or gospels written some time after his death by alleged disciples. He was almost certainly not born in the year one, or dot as it should have been, but four years earlier.

There is little to nothing known about him for the first thirty years of his life and then when he was thirty-two he was baptized by John the Baptist. Being Jewish himself, John the Baptist was continually on the look out for the Messiah and he saw Jesus as that Messiah.

Jesus was unlike other ministers of the time in that he worked chiefly among the poor, although it is very unsure that he came from a poor family himself. He was after all of the House of David, the ruling royal family of the day and age.

Within a couple of years of ministering to the poor and calling himself the son of God, he was arrested by the Roman and Jewish ruling class and, as most Christians believe, crucified. After three days he rose from the dead and after forty days his spirit went up into Heaven to sit at the right hand of his father, God.

Christians see their Bible as an augmentation of Judaism rather than a denial or a breaking away from it. It is to be expected that early followers of Jesus were ostracized by traditional Jewish leaders as a break-away sect and in many ways that is what Christianity still is to this day, although it now has more adherents than Judaism.

The Christian Bible is in two sections, the Old Testament, which correlates to the Jewish Bible or Masorah and the New Testament, which relates to the time after Jesus’ birth which is not included in the Masorah.

The most important part of the New Testament by far is the gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each of these gospels presents Jesus, his life and his teachings from the personal standpoint of the writer, each having been one of Jesus’ apostles.

The basis of Christian belief is: 1] that Jesus was the embodiment of God on Earth; 2] atonement - ie that Jesus’ death atoned for the sins of all mankind in eternity, so we can all go to Heaven; 3] that the one God has three aspects: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost.

After that it gets a bit difficult.

Consuming Insects For Survival Or Pleasure

Monday, June 13th, 2011

In the developed world, not a lot of individuals eat insects for pleasure, but that is fairly unusual if you consider the number of people and the number of nations in the world that do. In Asia, numerous people consume insects on a weekly or even daily basis. However, you may one day be happy that you read about eating insects, if you are stranded somewhere far from any other source of food.

For instance, lots of army personnel are taught how to eat worms and insects as part of their routine training course as part of their survival training. Insects are abundant and are simple to catch or trap, they are also a richer source of protein than steak and easier to cook and far less risky to eat raw than meat from mammals, fish or birds.

Insects can supply more than three times the amount of protein weight for weight than any meat or fish. They are also free, you just have to know where to look or how to bait them. However, you ought to not consume just any insect that you can get your hands on. There a couple of simple basic guidelines.

Do not consume anything that can bite or sting you back. Not because this is perilous to you, but because creatures like bees, wasps and some ants only do not taste pleasant because of the poisons they make for their stings. A distinguished exception to this rule is the scorpion. Many individuals find roast scorpion a delicacy.

You could hone this rule to merely include brightly coloured, stinging insects - particularly ones with yellow colouring. Furry insects are not nice either, particularly caterpillars. Flying insects in general, like flies, mosquitoes, blue bottles and the like, ought to be avoided too.

Big beetles (with the exception of cockroaches), grass hoppers, locusts, crickets and scorpions are the best. So are worms, maggots and most other larvae of that type like bee, wasp and hornet larvae. Termites and non-stinging ants are also safe to eat.

Most people fry the insects in oil after removing the wings (like with flying termites or ants). However, if you are stuck in the wild, you might not have any oil with you. Luckily, that is not too much of a problem if you cook the insects quite slowly, because most of them have enough of their own body fat to be fried in.

If you find that taking your first meal of insects is simply too much to stomach, have a go at mashing them in with some boiled root vegetables or wrap them in leaves. Boiled nettle leaves are very good for you and young dandelion leaves can be consumed raw like lettuce.

If you are not sure how far to cook your insects, worms and larvae, here are a few pointers from Asia. Fry big beetles, termites and scorpions until they are hard on the outside but with a small, slightly soft centre. Fry worms, crickets, grass hoppers and the like until they are hard and crisp and boil grubs and bee, wasp and hornet larvae for only a few seconds.

Most Westerners that visit Thailand turn their noses up at eating insects, but after six years of living here, I have never heard any of those who tasted them say that they were awful. In fact, most said that they were astonishingly tasty, but then why else would so many individuals like them?

Young Girls And Their Dolls’ Prams

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Do you have a little girl in your life? Say a young daughter or a young niece? If she is between about five and ten years of age? If you are wondering what you can get a little girl of this age as a present, then perhaps I can help you out with a few tips

Does she like playing with dolls? Then I am willing to bet that she would want a doll’s pram. Young girls like to imitate their mums and the mothers that they see on the street. They like to walk with their friends, pushing their dolls in their prams around the backyard.

Some people say that this is a bad thing to encourage, but despite trying to discourage parents from purchasing stereotypical toys for boys and, especially, girls for thirty or forty years, young girls still like to play with dolls and doll’s prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets..

Those young girls from the Seventies and Eighties are now in their thirties and forties, many of them are feminists as well, so the experience of playing with dolls and dolls’ prams and other traditional girls’ toys does not seem to have done them any harm.

In fact, I think that it is much healthier for girls to play with dolls than it is for boys to play at being soldiers or cowboys wielding toy guns, although even that probably does not do any harm. Boys have probably been playing with toy guns, toy bows and arrows or even toy spears for thousands of years.

And I dare say that young girls have been playing with dolls and giving them tea parties for only as long too. Whilst I was in infants’ school fifty years ago, our class had a Wendy House and girls and boys played in there together, although it was more for the girls - I do remember thinking that.

Traditional girls’ presents like dolls, dolls’ prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets sort of went out of fashion in the West in the last twenty-five years of the Twentieth Century, but they are back again now. These conventional girls’ toys can be seen in all the toys catalogues and toy stores such as Toys R Us.

They seem to be a lot cheaper now than they used to be as well, unless you want a dolls’ pram from one of the long-established pram manufacturers like Silver Cross. Silver Cross dolls’ prams are beautifully made displaying all the attention to detail and quality that they put into their full-size prams, which were ‘By Appointment to His and Her Royal Highnesses’ the kings and queens of the United Kingdom from about the mid 1930’s to the mid-1980’s.

Who knows, maybe they will be appointed again when the next royal baby arrives. At the moment Silver Cross, which has outlets all around the world and on the Internet, is also giving away a classic rag doll with each purchase of one of their perambulators.

Buddhism And The Three Chief Buddhist Sects

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

After Buddha’s death in 483 BC, his closest adherents (his disciple monks) took time off their preaching to write down his sermons (sutras) and his regulations (vinayas). In the old convention of Buddha, monks originally walked the countryside preaching and teaching for nine months of the year and went to sit out the monsoon period in a retreat for three months.

These retreats became monasteries and temples. This withdrawal into monasteries was important in the development of various interpretations of Buddha’s doctrines and in due course led to the formation of different sects which gained popularity in different parts of Asia.

There are three foremost Buddhist sects: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana or Tantric Buddism.

Theravada Buddhism is the principal sect in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand and is the sect that remains most faithful to Buddha’s original doctrines. Theravada Buddhism teaches that the path to the achievement of personal Nirvana is the objective of life. It is a very personal religion in that everybody is alone on their own path to enlightenment.

Mahayana Buddism became the largest sect and spread along the Silk Road from India through China to east Asia starting in around 200 BC. Mahayana Buddhists worship Buddha and the Buddhist saints (bodhisattvas - literally ‘wisdom beings’).

Bodhisattvas are beings that curb themselves from achieving Nirvana (and therefore leaving the wheel of life or cycle of birth, death and reincarnation) so that they may help others accomplish Nirvana, which is a most important difference between it and Theravada Buddhism.

Mahayana Buddhism is more readily absorbed by different cultures than the other forms which accounts for it having spread so far. The Buddhist emperor Ashoka (272-232 BC) gave Mahayana a huge boost in popularity by despatching missionaries to Sri Lanka, south-east Asia and China from where it was taken to Korea and Japan in the Sixth Century anno domini.

Zen Buddhism grew in popularity in Japan and China in the Seventh Century. Zen Buddhism is a variant of Mahayana Buddhism and teaches that Nirvana can be achieved through mental conditioning and meditation.

Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism arose in the Seventh Century as well and is most common in Tibet and Mongolia. Vajrayana Buddhism tries to identify the initiate with a visualized deity. Tantric cannon includes esoteric writings, teaching that meditation can engage the mind by the use of mantras (chants), mudras (hand gestures) and mandalas (visible icons). The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and temporal head of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhists.

Buddhism reached its height of popularity in China during the T’ang dynasty in the Ninth Century, when it was partially suppressed by royal command. Likewise Zen attained its height of popularity in the Nineteen Century when the Japanese royal family switched to Shintoism taking many of the royal hangers-on with it. Buddhism declined in India as well in the Eighth Century because lots of its concepts were absorbed into Hinduism. Buddism was to all intents and purposes extinct in India by the Thirteenth Century.

How The NASCAR Starting Order Is Determined

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

All NASCAR races make use of NASCAR qualifying results to assist determine the starting positions of the vehicles in the race. However, it is not merely as simple as that because the starting positions are not only worked out by qualifying results.

Some starting positions are determined by previous results and a team?s standing, but in general, the qualifying results have the main impact on the starting positions of cars in a NASCAR race.

The starting positions for the qualifying races are determined by the luck of a draw or a sequence of draws. The order of the runs is from the lowest number to the highest with higher numbers having a slight advantage because the condition of the race track alters with use. The more frequently it is used the faster the track becomes.

The NASCAR teams send out their cars one at a time based on the numbers that they drew in the random draw. Each car is allowed a predetermined length of track to get up to speed and as it flies over the starting line it is given a green flag to indicate that the stop watch has been started.

Each sports car is allowed two laps to prove its speed; the faster time will be its entry into the qualifiers for the real starting positions. Drivers have different tactics for these two laps, but one common strategy is to make use of the outside lane of the track for the first lap.

This allows the sports car to travel more distance and therefore warm up more. The second lap can then be run along the fastest lines giving a lower qualifying time.

Another approach, albeit a less conventional one, is to forego the second lap because it reduces the strain on the car giving it a better chance in the final, actual race. This is a dangerous approach which not many drivers decide to undertake.

Qualifying results for NASCAR races are based exclusively on the length of time it takes to complete a lap. This obviously has to do with speed, but the actual top speed over a short distance is not taken into account.

If there is a tie for a place, times are compared down to 0.001 (one-thousandth) of a second. If there is still a tie, then the winner is the driver with the highest number of points in the season thus far.

The media tends to report racing results in miles per hour (MPH) which is certainly tracked, but it does not establish the winner. The winner is the one with the fastest lap time, which can also be converted into an overall speed.

Because the media report the results in this way, the general public has a tendency to think that the car reaching the highest MPH will be the winner, but that is false or at least not the whole story.

Sometimes the qualifying rounds have to be cancelled, most often due to very bad weather conditions, then the NASCAR qualifying positions are based on the owner?s previous amount of points.

Fund Raising For Schools

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Numerous schools have to engage in fund raising because of a deficit in government funding. This lack of adequate government funding will only get worse given the cutbacks that the governments of the world have seen fit to enforce in order to help put an end to the financial crisis brought about by the failure of so numerous financial institutions.

It is commonly called the banking crisis and it is being used as an excuse for slashing the funding of government departments like schooling and health care. You will get able to judge how hard your local schools have been hit by the amount of school fund raising in your region.

A conventional method of school fund raising is the selling of goods from a catalogue from door to door. Typically, school children are given the catalogues to take home and to take around their neighbours. Those who sell the most often win prizes.

The season of school fund raising usually starts as soon as the kids go back to school in the autumn after the summer break. If the schools in your area have been badly hit by the cutbacks, you may have dozens of children knocking on your door trying to sell you over-priced knick-knacks.

However, some schools endeavor to be more imaginative in their fund raising, because fewer and fewer people are prepared to pay way over the top for emergency plugs, wrapping paper and scissors.

Some of these innovative approaches include selling sandwiches, pizzas, hot dogs, barbecued chicken and cookie dough. Other methods are to hold a bring and buy sale or a fayre with sideshows, stalls, bingo and a bouncy house. Raffles are also popular methods of raising money for schools as long as the prizes are worth winning.

Although school fund raising is a nuisance for parents, it is a necessary evil, if the school is to meet its responsibility to provide children with a decent education. One good method of increasing money is to publish a monthly school magazine. Kids and teachers can write pieces and stories for the magazine and a board of students and teachers can edit and compile it.

It is a decent idea if the head teacher gives a report in each issue. Local companies can be approached to buy marketing space and the magazine can be sold for a small amount. This will provide a regular and fairly stable monthly income and each parent will want one as will other people who live in the vicinity of the school.

The problem of underfunding is a big one and it will not be going away any time soon, however, families are suffering from the financial squeeze as well so schools ought to change their focus when attempting to raise money. Parents definitely do not want to feel obliged to buy over-priced rubbish because it is children who are selling it - it is a form of moral blackmail.

The best way to raise money for schools is to give value for money. So, if you have to organize school fund raising, give out catalogues by all means, but make them good ones or create your own in conjunction with a big, local department store; put on a Christmas pantomime, nativity play or/and carol service; in the warmer months organize public events like bazaars, fayres and bring and buy sales and publish a monthly school magazine throughout the year.

Why You Should Start Planning Your Party Early

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

There are quite a few opportunities to give a party during the year what with birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, New Year, Independence Day et cetera, et cetera, but every party has one thing in common, they all have to be planned and the sooner that that planning is started the better.

There are good reasons for starting your planning early. Things can go wrong and individuals can let you down, but if you begin planning early, you can switch to ‘plan B’ easily. You may also have ideas while you are performing your planning and then you will have time to implement them.

Depending on what kind of party you are planning, you might have to start planning about a month ahead, but you may have to begin even earlier, if you need outside catering or specialized objects like a bouncy house. You might have to book these objects months in advance in order to get precisely what food you want or the theme of the bouncy house that you want.

Depending on where you are throwing the party and how many are coming, you might also need to get permission or even a license and you might even require portable toilets too. How about security and sign posts? For example, it is fairly normal for organizers of wedding parties in rural Thailand to employ security, who will also supply road signs and willdirect traffic.

Another valid reason for starting early is that you can buy objects that you require weekly and so spread the outlay. You could purchase the paper plates, plastic knives, forks and spoons, plastic beakers, straws and paper table cloths in the first week, the other items you need, such as the drinks, crisps and biscuits, in the following weeks, until all you have to buy in the week of the party is the perishable food such as sausage rolls, pies, pasties, sandwiches and cakes.

You may also need specialized decorations, particularly for themed birthday parties, Halloween and Christmas. Finding the correct decorations for these kinds of parties can take a long time, which is another reason for beginning your planning earlier rather than later.

Another decent reason for getting going early is that you can get the invitations out early, which gives your guests the opportunity to put you in their diaries. It also gives them plenty of time to accept or refuse the invitation so that you can either invite more friends to make the numbers up or you can notify the caterers that you will need less food.

It is a sad fact that in spite of all your planning, some facets will go wrong, they always do and you will forget some things as well, people always do and the best precautions against these potential calamities are firstly to begin planning early and secondly to get a few people involved in the planning, because as they say, two heads are better than one.
