More Than Just Trackers And Navigators - The Benefits Of Personal GPS

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

Nowadays, its not just car owners that have a use for GPS units. Personal GPS units can be used for tracking and other purposes and not just navigational anymore. Aside from navigating your car through the city or in the country, you can use a GPS navigator to track the location of your vehicle or a person. There are passive and real time trackers that are effective ways to track down the whereabouts of your stolen vehicle, determine where you parked it, or where your kids took them. These devices can help you stay within speed limits, as well as determine the fastest route to another location.

But more than just a tracking device, there are a lot more uses for a personal GPS unit. Athletic watches are now personal GPS device as well and help you track your progress. Monitor information such as your distance, speed, elevation, hear and pulse rates and other information. Keep the data in your personal GPS unit and upload them later in your PC with a training application.

Personal GPS tracking systems can also be used for outdoor activities. Going into the wild has never been safer with downloadable maps and waypoints to help you keep track of where you are. In case you get lost, you can easily find your way back to camp. Sail out at open sea with full courage because personal GPS units are the best guides ever. Check out weather forecasts and pinpoint your exact location with these highly sophisticated devices.

GPS coordinates are quite easy to interpret. Simply divide the earth through North, South, East and West. The first set of numbers determine your latitude or distance from the equator. East and west are the two sides of the prime meridian. Your location is the point where your two numbers meet.

Consult some review sites to find excellent GPS units. Read some review pages like garmin 910XT reviews and garmin 110 reviews. They contain key features of various devices and points of comparisons. Remember, the best GPS unit for you is one that would cater to your daily and special needs.

Personal GPS devices are now more than just city driving aids. To learn more click here to read garmin 910XT reviews and garmin 110 reviews

First Aid For Safety While Hunting

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Everyone ought to know fundamental First Aid techniques, but it is especially important for those who participate in potentially more dangerous sports or activities such as hunting. There are all types of things that can happen to you while hunting.

Besides being shot, you could cut yourself when skinning an animal, you could get attacked by an animal, you could fall and break a leg or you could suffer a routine heart attack that could have happened anywhere.

However, what makes all these accidents more dangerous when you are hunting is the likelihood that you will be located miles from anywhere whilst it occurs. There is no one to turn to except your companion. No ambulances, no doctors and no hospitals for tens of miles.

The first thing that everybody should know is CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is an emergency procedure consisting of external cardiac massage and artificial respiration. It is vital to know CPR techniques for everyone not only hunters.

You can learn CPR at several local institutions including the hospital, the fire station, some schools, some scouting organizations and some other institutions like the Boys’ Brigade or the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade.

These organizations can usually teach you over CPR if you want, such as what to do in a crisis. There are particular procedures that are common to most if not all crisis situations. For example, the first rule is to always take care of yourself first. Then assess the situation and make the area safe for yourself and anyone who might come into it.

This may sound selfish, but you are no help to anyone if you allow yourself to get injured and the rescue services will be very wary if the region is unsafe when they get there. Then either begin first aid procedures or call the rescue services depending on the circumstances.

Healthcare workers teach the ABC method of applying First Aid. ABC stands for ‘Airway, Breathing and Circulation’. So, first look in the mouth and at the throat. Check for and remove any blockages such as blood, dentures or foreign bodies.

Then check for breathing. If the patient has ceased breathing, try to resuscitate him or her because the brain cannot survive longer than a few minutes without oxygen.

Next check the heart beat. If it has stopped endeavour to get it going again. If there is copious bleeding from a wound, try to staunch the bleeding by applying pressure to it through a clean cloth. Get help if there are a number of wounds but apply tourniquets to arms and legs that are bleeding badly. You can use a belt or stockings as make-shift tourniquets.

If the patient has experienced a bad fall, the first rule is not to move the person. You can cause serious injury to someone with broken bones by moving them. You can even cause paralysis, so if someone has fallen, enquire whether they are able to move their fingers and toes (a sign that the spine is almost certainly undamaged) and then phone the rescue services.

Two of the best safety rules when going hunting, are to inform someone where you are going and never to go alone. If you hunt with the same person often, why not both go to a First Aid class together?

Home Fire Safety Checklist

Monday, June 20th, 2011

The way in which to deal with situations which could reasonably be expected to result in panic is to have a plan of action firmly entrenched in your mind already, so that in the event, you only have to follow routine. This is how people are taught in the military and in rescue organizations. They have procedures and routines and they practice them until they become second nature.

This is not so easy in a domestic situation particularly with regard to a house fire - you cannot convincingly pretend that you have a house fire yet you cannot merely set fire to bits of it either, so the next best thing is to have a checklist to prevent fires occurring and to go through the checklist on a routine basis - say, weekly.

Numerous house fires begin in the kitchen, so you could start there:

1] Is the oven clean? The rings and the oven need to be clean or the debris can catch fire.

2] Are the curtains so long that possible get blown onto a hot ring if the window is open? This is a frequent cause of kitchen fires, especially if you hang new curtains in the winter or spring but do not realize that the wind can blow them into the rings until the summer while you open the windows

3] Are the flexes on your electrical devices all in order? Check for fraying or wear and tear. Are any of the electrical sockets overloaded? It is not a sensible thing to use adapters in the kitchen - stick to the principle of one plug in one socket and a really decent habit is to unplug anything you are not using, even the kettle or the coffee machine

The home’s heating system is a fire risk, after all it is meant to be hot, so check it:

1] All heaters ought to get switched off while there is no one to keep an eye on them, with the exception of central heating. Turn bar fires off while you go out or go to bed and always fix a guard in front of open fires if you leave the room. ‘Fix’ a guard with clips, do not merely stand one in front of the fire because a falling log or lump of coal can knock a guard over.

2] Can curtains or other fabrics blow into the fire or be heated to the point of combustion? Occasionally, people pull their seat or couch up to the fire and fall asleep or go to bed leaving the seat to heat up.

3] Is the chimney clean? Soot can and does catch fire so have your chimney cleared or inspected regularly.

4] Similarly with the furnace, is it clean and soot-free?

5] If you use gas, are the bottles stored outside the house?

5) Is the furnace been cleaned and inspected each year?

6) Are the propane tanks yet fuels stored outside the house?

Then there are general points:

1] Do you have a house fire safety evacuation drill? Do you have a muster point, so that everyone knows that everyone is out of the house but safe?

2] Are electric leads, cables and extension leads in good condition? Do you have any under carpets? If so, you should not really, so check them for wear.

3] Are any sockets overloaded? Are all devices that are not in use unplugged?

4] Do you have smoke detectors? Do you check that they are working? Do you have a spare battery in case one fails?

RV Safety Tools

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

A family journey in an RV or ‘recreational vehicle’ can be great fun, and one of the ways that you can try to make sure that it goes well, is to plan for as many eventualities as possible. This involves taking a few safety items or safety tools that are helpful for an RV trip.

If you are journeying far from the beaten track, then adequate supplies of food and water are the prime concerns naturally. You will also have to have adequate appropriate clothing for the time of the year and the place you are travelling in.

However, keep in mind, that some regions are chilly at night no matter what time of the year it is, so a few jumpers or light jackets will come in useful if you are travelling in the mountains, in the north (in the northern hemisphere) or along the coast.

Once you have the prerequisites to survive, there are a few luxury safety devices, that you might find practical. The first of these is the mobile phone. There may or might not be sufficient coverage where you are going, but the chances are that it will work somewhere near, if you need to use it. Be certain that you have a charger that works in the RV and a hands free kit if possible.

The luxury of all luxuries is a GPS unit - Global Positioning System - so that you do not get too lost, if you are out in the boondocks or even in some large, unknown metropolis looking for the hotel you booked into over the Internet for a few days break from the road.

If you are renting your RV, there is almost certainly a GPS system on board, but if you are taking your own vehicle, you might consider purchasing a mobile phone that also has GPS built into it. These hand held devices are plenty accurate to steer you back on track.

However, they are electrical devices and as such can break down at any time, especially when you particularly need them, so make sure that you have a modern road map as well.

While you are on vacation, the weather is quite important - in fact it can make or break a vacation, so why not take a portable weather radio with you? A weather radio is precisely what it implies. It is a radio that specializes in picking up weather broadcasts - particularly local ones.

This is very convenient indeed, particularly if where you are heading is not experiencing the sort of weather you are searching for. It allows you to modify your destination without having to be there first. These useful devices often come with other tools built in like a torch and a timer (alarm clock).

Make sure that your RV has an adequate set of vehicle repair tools including gloves and safety goggles. Gloves are practical for keeping your hands clean if you have a repair to make and safety goggles come in very handy if you have to swap a wheel in a dust, rain or snow storm.

The last thing on our list, but not the least important, is a decent First Aid Kit. When selecting a First Aid kit, comprehensive is definitely better than small.

Young Girls And Their Dolls’ Prams

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Do you have a little girl in your life? Say a young daughter or a young niece? If she is between about five and ten years of age? If you are wondering what you can get a little girl of this age as a present, then perhaps I can help you out with a few tips

Does she like playing with dolls? Then I am willing to bet that she would want a doll’s pram. Young girls like to imitate their mums and the mothers that they see on the street. They like to walk with their friends, pushing their dolls in their prams around the backyard.

Some people say that this is a bad thing to encourage, but despite trying to discourage parents from purchasing stereotypical toys for boys and, especially, girls for thirty or forty years, young girls still like to play with dolls and doll’s prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets..

Those young girls from the Seventies and Eighties are now in their thirties and forties, many of them are feminists as well, so the experience of playing with dolls and dolls’ prams and other traditional girls’ toys does not seem to have done them any harm.

In fact, I think that it is much healthier for girls to play with dolls than it is for boys to play at being soldiers or cowboys wielding toy guns, although even that probably does not do any harm. Boys have probably been playing with toy guns, toy bows and arrows or even toy spears for thousands of years.

And I dare say that young girls have been playing with dolls and giving them tea parties for only as long too. Whilst I was in infants’ school fifty years ago, our class had a Wendy House and girls and boys played in there together, although it was more for the girls - I do remember thinking that.

Traditional girls’ presents like dolls, dolls’ prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets sort of went out of fashion in the West in the last twenty-five years of the Twentieth Century, but they are back again now. These conventional girls’ toys can be seen in all the toys catalogues and toy stores such as Toys R Us.

They seem to be a lot cheaper now than they used to be as well, unless you want a dolls’ pram from one of the long-established pram manufacturers like Silver Cross. Silver Cross dolls’ prams are beautifully made displaying all the attention to detail and quality that they put into their full-size prams, which were ‘By Appointment to His and Her Royal Highnesses’ the kings and queens of the United Kingdom from about the mid 1930’s to the mid-1980’s.

Who knows, maybe they will be appointed again when the next royal baby arrives. At the moment Silver Cross, which has outlets all around the world and on the Internet, is also giving away a classic rag doll with each purchase of one of their perambulators.

Gun Safety For Shooters And Hunters

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Most boys and an increasing number of girls want to shoot. Not everyone wants to kill something but that is neither here nor there. The test for shooters is to be able to hit the target when required. Gun safety is vital, of course, because guns can be used as lethal weapons, yet at the end of the day, a gun is only a tool but tools can be used and mis-used.

Guns though are specific tools, as are all tools actually, but they have such an evocative reputation. Some Individuals are violently against them yet others uphold their legal right to hold them in a world where a higher percentage of criminals hold guns than innocent civilians.

Criminals will not toe the line by definition, but for the rest of us gun holders, it is quite important to show that we are responsible - that we know how to be safe towards others with our firearm. It is a manner of dispelling fear in non-shooters and displaying that we are not all red-neck, gung ho idiots.

So, the first law is: always to regard a gun as if it were loaded. You never, ever point a gun at anyone in jest. Several famous individuals have been killed in shooting accidents. OK, frequently when they were stoned, but ‘being out of it’ is no excuse whatsoever for behaving irresponsibly. Do not point a gun at anyone you do not want to threaten - and that means threaten really big time!

There is never, ever any valid reason for having to aim a gun at anyone in jest or accidentally. While loading a gun, it should be held so that the barrel is pointing away from anyone, even yourself.

If you are asked to pass a gun to someone, either you have to know them well or you do not do it. Whether the gun is loaded or not. The number of times I have been handed a loaded gun is incredible and I cannot put it down to my charisma.

If you must show off your gun, unload it in front of your friend and check that it is unloaded in front of your friend. If he or she does not know about guns, at least you are demonstrating how to check the safety of the gun and that you are responsible.

One means of demonstrating or reminding yourself that a gun is safe is to fasten a ribbon to a blank case and put that in the cylinder of a revolver and take the magazine out of a semi-automatic. Always hand a revolver over for viewing with the cylinder flipped out so that the person can establish that the chambers are empty except the one with the ribbon.

Never, ever play about with guns if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs - it is too simple to make mistakes that can land you in jail and regretting the incident for the remainder of your life, because the one injured or killed in these circumstances is usually a friend - someone you were having a good time with.

The Importance Of Good Clothing

Monday, June 6th, 2011

One of the strangest social or cultural phenomena since the Second World War is the change in criteria which individuals use to purchase garments. For thousands of years before then, people wanted the best possible clothing that they could get and one of the criteria that they used to judge each other was their dress sense or the quality of their clothes.

This all started to change in the Seventies when it became more significant to not be seen wearing the same article too often, so it became more desirable to have five cheap shirts that would not last long than to have one high quality shirt that would last for years. How did this shift in principles come about?

The most obvious people to blame are the fashion designers (or their imitators) and the advertisers. Individuals without much money to spend on clothes do not like to be seen in the same blue shirt on every other occasion, they would rather have several colours, but perhaps these individuals do not understand the difference in the quality.

The quality of one’s clothing is vital as most women and about half as many men know. First impressions count and bright and cheerful (but cheap) is not as impressive to those who know the difference as quality.

To those people who say that the person should count over the clothing, I would say ‘Yes, in a perfect world. One day, but it is not the way it works now’. Why do people dress up for a date, and especially the first date? Why do people dress up for an interview? And why do individuals dress up to go to court?

It is because clothing matters and first impressions count and deep down, we all know it even though most of us wish that it did not matter so much.

First of all, it is important to find a style that suits you. Then you should purchase items of clothing that are decent examples of that style. They will not be cheap, but is a Hell’s Angel’s leather jacket cheap? Certainly not. Whatever niche you think you fit into or want to fit into, purchase the appropriate clothing to stand out for quality.

I am not saying that people have to dress appropriate to their age group, I am saying that people should dress appropriate to the upper echelons of their niche group. If you would like to become a Hell’s Angel, get one of the best leather jackets and if you want to work in an office, buy yourself a good suit. Just because you cannot tell the difference between a cheap one and a decent one does not mean that your peers cannot as well.

You just have so much scope to transform your physical appearance, but you can still create a big impression by wearing quality clothing like a decent overcoat, a decent suit, a good cardigan or a good shirt. The ones who know the difference will notice and it will not damage your prospects.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with the jean jacket. If you would like to know more, please visit our web site at Mens Overcoats For Sale.

Snow Boarding Safety Tips

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Safety is a very important part of snow boarding not merely to avoid injury to yourself but also to ensure the safety of innocent bystanders. Snow boarding safety should become the prime concern for all snow boarders, because it is considered an extreme sport and therefore more dangerous than usual.

So, in the interests of safety for snow boarders and their spectators, I have put a number of safety tips together below.

The first thing to do is to check the quality of the snow board. Look for damage and particularly cracks and splits. The board comes under a lot of stress while in use and you do not need it to disintegrate when you are travelling at speed.

When inspecting the board, check that it is the correct size for you - in other words, is there adequate room for you to put your feet on it comfortably? Using the correct size board will allow you to exercise your skill without impediment.

After making certain that the snow board is good enough, you ought to make certain that you have the right protective clothing. One obvious concern is staying warm and another is being able to see where you are going. When you are travelling at high speeds, small flecks of snow and debris can be very painful and even blind you temporarily, so make sure that you are wearing protective goggles.

However, the goggles should be of a sufficient safety level, say, polycarbonate, and must also offer UV protection - UVa, UVb and UVc, if possible. Oakley make safety glasses and goggles of this type.

Make sure that your underwear is warm and then it will not matter too much what outer clothing you don as long as it is waterproof and tear-resistant. Make sure that you are well padded, so that whenever you take that inevitable fall, there is less chance of you breaking bones.

Next, make sure that your inner body is sufficiently taken care of. Exercising in the snow and staying warm necessitates the expenditure of energy, so make sure that you have some. Whilst it is not recommended that you eat heartily immediately before exercising for fear of cramps, you do have to have eaten something with calories in it and you ought to make certain that your body is adequately hydrated.

Think about taking some emergency supplies with you too. Snow boarding is a dangerous sport so it is easily possible that you could suffer a bad fall and have to wait for an emergency rescue, which can take a time and the weather could turn foul, so have some energy-rich chocolate and cereal bars on your person. You can eat snow to make water, but you may want to take a litre of water with you anyway.

And last, but not least, take a cell phone with you - one that has GPS, so that you can accurately phone your location to the rescue services if you have to.

RFID Tags And Shopping

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Radio frequency identification or RFID is an old concept that has quietly become a large part of everyone’s life. RFID has been around for at least 90 years and was initially put into practice about 70 years, but not many people realized it. These days, you yourself are most likely scanned every day by an RFID reader and the things you purchase are certainly scanned at least once a week.

So what is RFID? Well, you can think of it as the update of the bar code although in fact, it is older than the bar code by 50 or 60 years. Bar codes were developed in order to integrate stock control with point of sales processing.

Everyone has seen this and is used to it: the sales clerk at the cash register takes the goods from your basket one at a time, looks for the bar code, flashes a light or a bar code reader over it and the cost of the article is added to your receipt.

What you do not see is that the computerized stock records for that item are lowered by one and the sales price is noted along side it. That procedure worked well for 40 years, but now there is a need for more information to be recorded than a bar code can accommodate and there is requirement for more stock control and even more speed at the check out. Nobody has any time any longer.

Enter RFID, an old technology brought back to life. RFID is the technology that they used to put in Second World War aircraft in order to identify friendly aircraft to the RADAR-controlled anti-aircraft guns. The same equipment, basically, that they still use in aircraft today to identify it to air traffic control. The difference is that until pretty recently, these radio signal emitters or transponders were as big as a suitcase and cost a lot of money.

These days they are the size of the tiniest coin in your change and cost about five cents. They win over the bar code because they can hold loads of information, like where and when and by whom an article was manufactured; how much it cost and how much it should be sold for; its colour, weight and description; which shelf and in which shop it should be kept on …. ad infinitum. The shop owner can write anything on that tag by means of an RFID printer.

And when it comes to the check out… No more scanning each individual article by hand, because each RFID chip or tag, as they are called in the industry, emits its own data on its own exclusive radio frequency, therefore so long as the RFID reader is within three or four feet of the basket, it knows what is in there instantly. No more emptying, scanning and reloading the basket.

In fact, no more check out clerk. Most people pay with a credit or debit card these days anyway, so as you walk past the RFID reader with your basket, you are scanned; you swipe your credit card through another scanner; if you are happy with it, you authorize the payment and the barrier raises for you to proceed to your car. You only need a check out clerk for the people who want to pay with cash. Cheques are being done away with soon anyway.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on quite a few topics, but is currently involved with the RFID asset tracking. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Active RFID Management.

RFID Chips: What Are They Good For?

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your purse, but they can hold huge amounts of information that can be manipulated in methods that can do fantastic things.

For instance, RFID tags are in most office identity tags and in a few passports, allowing the holder to pass through security quickly while keeping the building or the country secure.

They are a modern version of the bar code. Remember before bar codes and bar code readers? When a shop assistant had to key prices into the cash register, correct errors and look up prices that they could not remember? People do not have any time for that anymore.

It is OK at the newsagents, but picture a teenager typing in your two trolleys of weekly shopping at the superstore every Saturday. You would still be there on Sunday! Supermarkets have thousands of articles and dozens of special offers - no-one could remember that lot.

No-one could, but bar codes make it straightforward and so do RFID tags. Bar codes work well, but they have to be seen to be read. RFID tags send out their information on a unique frequency which can be read out of line of sight. In other words, an RFID scanner does not need to be able to see the tag to read it.

The scanner can see what is in your trolley without you having to unload it and as you pass by that scanner and pay for your things, they are deducted from stock straight away so that the warehouse manger can see what people are buying and what nobody wants to buy. So, if one brand of cat food is selling better than another, the manager will see that on the computer print-out and buy more of that make, thus keeping more people happy.

This use of RFID in inventory control or asset management to give it its more official title, can translate itself into other uses too. An RFID tag can be placed under your cat’s fur or in its collar so that you can find him if he gets lost. The police and the wardens scan stray animals for a tag as part of their routine these days. Zoologists have been doing this with wild elephants, big cats and other endangered species for years. Now you can have it done with your pets also.

Company vehicles, as assets of the business, often carry RFID tags and you can have one placed in your car to aid recovery if it is stolen. Baggage handlers at airports or bus terminals can (and do) use them to avoid lost luggage.

The US government requires RFID tags be used on all vehicles carrying explosives or dangerous substances and have done for nearly ten years. The US military is in fact the principal user of these tags in the world. RFID tags are used to track military assets such as armaments, battle tanks, fuel, containers, guns, you name it.

Some people are anxious about RFID technology. Where is the line between their convenience and their personal information? For example, they do not like getting junk emails from people that have been able to trace the purchases they made with their credit cards.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on several topics, but is now concerned with the RFID asset tracking. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Active RFID Management.
