Using Budget Lighting In Your Home

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Lighting is the one, single most critical means of altering the mood of any room. Therefore, it stands to reason that if you enhance the lighting and appearance of your house, its value will also increase. Lighting enhances any decor. However, you do not have to use expensive lighting, budget or discount light is just as good in most cases.

There are thousands of kinds of lighting, at least one of which will go well with the type of decor that you have. Lighting is best kept subtle. Up lighting, down lighting and back lighting are fantastic ways of lighting up objects in a room. The days of one pendant lamp hanging from a rose in the centre of the ceiling are long gone so if you do have to have one, at least put a dimmer on it.

Using many lights instead of one powerful light does not have to be more expensive. Typically, the one powerful light was a 100 watt bulb, so you could have four 20 watt wall lights and still save 20% on electricity. Or you could use one 40 watt bulb in a standard floor lamp or table lamp for reading or working and save 60% on your lighting bill.

Besides the savings, a wrought iron floor or table lamp is far more beautiful that a pendant light. How about candelabra? You could make use of candelabra to stunning effect, whether you use candles in them or small light bulbs.

Candles have made a big return too. Many people use candles for subsidiary or even back-up lighting and candelabra are one of the hottest latest trends. Interior designers are buying them up antique shops and painting them bright colours. You can see them in the photos of the houses of many celebrities. A lot of people use candelabra in conjunction with aromatherapy too.

Another aspect of lighting is security. A well-lit house is less likely to be burgled than a dark house. Outside lighting can also play a major role in security precautions. External lighting that is controlled by movement or heating sensors to switch them on are the best means of discouraging burglars.

External lighting is the best deterrent, but it can also be beautiful. Back or up lighting on a water fall, a pond or a beautiful arrangement of plants or bushes is stunning in the dark. Spotlights have a role to play in lighting up garden plants as well.

If you want to give your fish free, organic meat to eat, put a floodlight or even an ultraviolet light at the pond side. If you switch it on for a few hours after dusk, hundreds of flies, moths and mosquitoes will be drawn to it and fall into the water, where your fish will be waiting for them.

You can have a lot of fun with lighting and the possibilities are infinite. Both indoor and outdoor lighting can increase the beauty of your home and garden, but they also have functional uses: they enable you to see what you are doing and what other people are doing, which is why they are a good deterrent. Good lighting also makes anyone living alone feel more secure.

Six Useful Pieces Of Advice For Saving Money

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

When times are difficult, like they have become lately, it is time to cut costs. This is not a well-liked move, but really, it need not be such a problem as you might envisage. The biggest single cost for most households is the energy bill and in particular the electric bill. If you do not use electricity to cook or heat your house, then the next biggest contributor to your bill is probably lighting.

Anyway, here are six suggestions for reducing your household expenditure.

1] Plan your menu before you go shopping. If you can, plan your meals for the entire week so that you can use bits and pieces from one day’s meals in the next day’s. It is also easier and less expensive to buy in quantity, which will also save you travelling costs. Use coupons were you can. It is an obvious idea, but one that a lot of people overlook as they peruse their magazines.

2] Substitute all your traditional, incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL). These bulbs use a low quantity of energy, but still put out a high amount of light. It is a good idea to check for the ‘Energy Star’ rating before you buy in order to make certain that you are getting a high quality product.

3] Instead of using all the lighting in a room, try to illuminate only what you need. If you are working at your desk, switch off all the other lighting except a desk top lamp and possibly a standard floor lamp. It is astounding how far light travels in a dak room. The light from two lamps such as these will be ample to see your way about too.

4] Buy stocks of light bulbs by the score. They will last a long time, but the CFL bulbs will not deteriorate, so as the price rises with inflation, you will have a stock at the old price. If you can, buy them online, because an online retailer has fewer expenses, which can translate into savings of as much as 70%. Online auctions are also a good idea, you may be able to pick up bankrupt stock.

5] Prepare your own meals and make your own food for work. Take homemade sandwiches or salads. A flask of tea or coffee will supply up to $25 of Starbucks’ alternative coffee drinks

6] Put as many of your lights and appliances on timers or photosensitive switches. If you use passive infra red sensors to activate lights to deter intruders in your garden, you could be using up more electricity than you need to during the day. If you buy flood lights with photosensitive switches, then they will deactivate the lights during daylight when they are pretty useless anyway.

If you have a pond and pond lights, you can also use similar switches to turn your pond lights and pond fountain off during the nighttime..

None of these measures should have a negative effect on your lifestyle, although they will save you money.

Exterior Shutters For Security And Lighting Options

Monday, August 1st, 2011

When you want to add style to your house, one way of doing so and adding security at the same time, is by having window shutters fixed to the outside of your home. Exterior window shutters add a traditional, Mediterranean look to a property. These days, most houses have glass windows, but before that, people used shutters to regulate the light levels, stop insects and the cold from entering and for security.

Exterior window shutters are available in many different shapes and made from various materials, although the most common ones are wooden and oblong. The quality of the materials used will determine how long your shutters will last, because, as with all exterior goods, they will be exposed to all types of extreme weather conditions.

Plastic, vinyl, metal and wooden shutters are to be had at many home improvement centres. Although they look fantastic, shutters also have practical uses. They can prevent glaring noon sunlight from over heating your home as well as providing protection.

Cedar wood is a good choice, as are most other hard woods. Hardwoods are more resistant to rain and sunlight and, so long as they are painted, varnished or oiled regularly - at least once a year - then your shutters will give you ten or more years of good service.

Most varieties of hardwood are very resistant to attack from insects as well. This is because a lot of them contain oils that are distasteful or even toxic to insects. However, if you are uncertain about the quality of the timber that your shutters are crafted from, you can paint them.

Painting, staining or oiling is far simpler if you carry it out before you hang the shutters. If you want to use oil to protect your new wooden shutters, first stain them to the shade that you want them to be with a stain without varnish. When you have achieved the desired shade and it has dried, pour oil linseed oil onto a cloth and rub it into the wood in circular movements. The more coats you give it the better, but it may not take more that two or three coats.

If you want to varnish your shutters, either stain them to the colour you require as above and then seal them with clear yacht varnish or use a stained yacht varnish without the stain. Whichever way you go, thin the first coat of varnish down until it is almost watery. Paint it on and leave to dry. Rub it down with medium coarse sandpaper and then coat it again with neat varnish. Wait for it to dry and sand it down again, but with fine sandpaper. Add at least one more coat, but it is a matter of the more the better.

If you want to paint them, apply a primer or some thinned down undercoat. Wait for it to dry and sand it lightly with fine sandpaper. Next, apply a coat of undercoat that is suitable for the finishing colour. For example, grey is good for black, brown and even green or red. Sand it down when it is dry with fine paper. Finally, gloss your shutters with the final colour.

In conclusion, hang the shutters on apposite hinges using brass screws. Next time, you paint or varnish your shutters paint over the screw heads, although brass never looks out of place anyway.

How Lighting Can Provide Atmosphere And Save Money

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

There is no doubt that lighting has the greatest influence on atmosphere and. Soft lighting in a bedroom or at an intimate dinner results in a romantic ambiance; bright, purposeful lighting in the office or kitchen shows that you mean business; dimmed lighting in the living room creates a relaxing atmosphere in which to watch a film or read a book.

Understated, back lighting behind flowers or a waterfall creates a magical atmosphere, whereas harsh floodlights turned on by a motion sensor would freeze most intruders in their tracks.

Getting the lighting wrong can have a seriously adverse effect on any room or occasion. Imagine a romantic dinner for two by candlelight and then imagine it by a naked 100 watt bulb hanging from the ceiling or a fluorescent tube.

It is said that the average household can save at least twenty-five percent on its electricity bills by using lighting more effectively and therefore more efficiently. More importantly, you could save more than sixty percent, if you swap from the normal incandescent light bulbs to high-output compact fluorescent lights. Sixty percent is a massive saving for you, your country and your planet.

Here are some of the means that you can achieve savings on the electricity you currently expend on lighting.

Insert dimmers wherever you use lighting. You can insert a touch lamp dimmer into the wiring of any lamp, so that when you touch it, it cycles from low, to medium, to high, to off. You will be amazed how often you will dim the light once you are able to, particularly in the case of desk or table lamps and standard floor lamps.

In a similar vein is the touch switch that you can utilize to control lighting that traditionally hangs from the ceiling. You will be able to dim the lights in any room and on the patio or deck too.

Photosensitive devices turn whatever they regulate off or on when the sun comes up. This is useful if you have motion-activated anti-intruder lighting. There is certainly no need for it in the daytime, but you do not want to have to remember to switch it off in the mornings and reactivate it every night either.

Another use could be to turn the water fountain off when it gets dark. All of these photosensitive switches can have over-ride switches too. These photosensitive devices will practically half the cost of running the systems to which they are attached.

It is very easy to make quite substantial savings if you put your mind to it. Just moving your furniture to take maximum advantage of natural light can help a lot as well. Sitting near a window or in the garden to read the newspaper is much better than having to switch the kitchen light on to read it in there.

In the evening it is better to switch off all the main lights in the living room if you are watching television or reading a book and put one standard floor lamp just to one side behind you. It is sufficient to read by or to save your eyes from the strain of watching TV in the dark.

Garden Swimming Pool Safety

Friday, July 15th, 2011

If you have a swimming pool, you have to be aware of the safety aspects concerning that pool. There is no counter-argument, that is one of the legal duties of an owner of a swimming pool . You are going to get visitors coming around who cannot swim; guests who have eaten or drunken too much and should not swim; children and skinny-dipping teenage intruders and you have to provide a safe environment in which to swim for all or them or deny access.

The first area of swimming pool safety to undertake is the denial of access and the easiest way of doing this is the assembly of a security fence. It will deny access to passing children, interlopers and friends who came around to see you on the off-chance when you were not in.

There are thousands of drownings by misadventure in garden swimming pools each year - most of them are children and drunks, who would still be alive today, if the pool had been locked up.

If you have your own children who cannot swim, get them taught as soon as you can and drill some safety routines into them. For example, they must never get in the pool without an adult supervising them and they must always wear flotation devices, which means that you should always have flotation devices on hand.

You will require waist rings, arm bands and life jackets. Those for use in a swimming pool by children are not costly and can be inflatable. It is also a good idea to have some pieces of styrofoam floating about just in case someone gets tired all of a sudden.

Make sure that there is always a capable swimmer on hand who knows basic First Aid, especially artificial respiration with particular reference to drowning. In fact, why not take the whole family down to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and all get your life-savers certificate? The least you should have is a proper life belt - ocean-going - on a rope that is long enough to reach anywhere in your pool and tie off the loose end.

It might be possible to get away with not having a security fence, if you use an above ground swimming pool, but you will have to confirm with the local authorities on that one. You will also have to take away the access ladders whilst it is not in use. Forgetting to do so could equate to criminal negligence if anyone were to drown in your pool.

Swimming pool safety is primarily about saving lives but it is also about the peace of mind of the owner of the swimming pool. If someone were to drown in your pool and you knew that you had not done everything within your power to avert it, you would almost certainly carry that burden of guilt with you for the remainder of your life, especially if it was a child and even more so if it was your child or the child of one of your guests.

The Necessity of Installing AV Software Today

Friday, July 15th, 2011

AV software or anti-virus software plays an important function in detecting, preventing, and removing malware, computer viruses, computer worms, Trojan horses, spyware and adware.

It is true that the Net has proved to be an excellent means of communication, but at the same time it is an simple target for computer viruses and worms that can cause great chaos to a networking system.

Computer viruses and worms have the capability to adjust, delete and steal data, with worms also having the ability to multiply and spread themselves to cause great concern.

The necessity of loading AV software is imperative because it is quite possible that a bug or worm could have been in a computer a long time before one knows it.

This could leave your computer infected a long while before you take action for its removal. So the proper functioning and storage of essential and confidential data requires the latest version of the software which can help to not just keep your personal computer clean and uninfected, but would also inform you of threats where prompt action is required.

A number of strategies can be used in anti-virus protection using signature based detection involving searching for known patterns of data within executable code. But it is vital to know that this does not always prove effective if the computer is contaminated with new malware.

There are regularly new updates created for the software to counter such so-called zero-day threats. Some of them use heuristics to foresee new dangers.

Generic signatures, one heuristic approach, has proved effective in identifying new versions or variants of current viruses by looking for known malicious code, or slight versions of such code, in files. Some AV software has, in addition, the ability to test what a file will do by running it in a sandbox. It can also analyze what it does to see if it will perform any malicious actions.

The necessity of installing AV software on your computer for Internet usage arises out of a requirement for computer safety and the protection of crucial documents and files that could become damaged or lost forever. The two main ways that AV software works involve, firstly, that it scans for all the viruses that are specified in the virus dictionary.

Then it alerts the user, after having discovered them, of their suspicious nature like port monitoring, spyware or data capturing. Then it takes action to be rid of infected files either automatically or on instruction from the user. Most good AV software will update these files automatically, which is achieved by having the software connect via the Net to the vendors? server for the regular downloading and installation of the latest virus patterns.

I would say that anti-virus software is without doubt necessary for the effective use of computers and the Internet, but it does not come without drawbacks such as the slowing down of the computer. Along with impairing the computer’s speed, it could give prompts and take decisions that are a problem for laymen to understand, thus leading to confusion and possible security breaches.

In addition, AV software that uses heuristic detection might occasionally not be able to accomplish the right balance between false positives and false negatives, with both of them proving destructive. Lastly AV software running at the highly sensitive kernel level of the operating system creates a potential avenue of attack.

Swimming Pool Heaters

Monday, July 11th, 2011

The most expensive aspect of owning a swimming pool is the construction of it. Maintenance is also costly. Therefore, those who have garden swimming pools usually attempt to get as many hours of use out it as they can. This equates to sitting in the garden at the poolside whenever possible and inviting friends and family around to share it all with them.

However, there is one more thing that you can do to increase the number of hours you can spend in your pool - you can lengthen the season that you are able to use it in. The temperature of the water is the only real constraint on swimming outside, it does not really matter whether it is snowing or raining as long as the water is warm enough.

Swimming in the rain, the mist and the snow is actually immense fun, at least as much fun as swimming in the sunshine, as long as the water is warm enough and there is no lightening. The answer is to install a water heater into your swimming pool system.

A swimming pool water heater can have a drastic impact on the amount of time you can spend in your pool. If you set the thermostat at 78-80 F (about 25 C), you can double the amount of time you can spend in the water. If you live in a warm part of the country, you may just require to heat the water by a couple of degrees to be able swim in luxury.

A large body of heated water will lose most of its heat through its surface area, so it is a good idea to cover your pool with a good quality insulation blanket-cum-pool cover. The insulated pool blankets will lessen your heating bills quite considerably and it will increase the level of pool safety considerably as well.

The most common systems for heating swimming pool water are liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or oil fired. These systems are simple to set up and relatively cheap to run. Electricity is also used, but it is not economical. If you live in the correct area meaning that you only require to raise the water temperature a couple of degrees, you could use solar power.

The problem with solar power is the profit margin the retailers want to make. If you make your own panels, purchase in kit form or buy secondhand panels, solar power would be the best approach, if you have the sun, but not quite sufficient heat.

At the time, gas-powered swimming pool water heating is still by far the simplest to set up and run and so offers the best solution to heating your pool. You will be able to get LPG water heaters secondhand from numerous sources and you will be able to purchase new from the Net as well. EBay is another good source of LPG swimming pool water heaters

How To Deal With Fogged Safety Glasses

Monday, July 11th, 2011

It is compulsory in most Western countries for employers to provide safety glasses or safety goggles and it is obligatory for employees to wear them when instructed to. It has been established that wearing safety glasses at work significantly reduces the number of accidents and accidents are costly.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported that eye injuries cost US firms around $467 million each and every year, so a few dozen pairs of safety glasses would easily recoup their cost. However, it is also important to use safety glasses that were intended to protect the eyes of wearers in specific professions.

One of the concerns with safety glasses is that they fog up. This means that employees often have to take off their glasses to de-mist them, which lessens the effectiveness of the glasses. Stopping fogging or misting is a major difficulty for makers of safety glasses.

The reason for of fogging is a lack of air flow. This is normally only a difficulty with goggles, because they tend to be a tighter fit so they get warmer, which vaporizes any moisture created by the eyes or by perspiration. It can also be caused by a low ambient temperature.

Consequently the first step towards solving the problem of fogging or misting in safety glasses is to find out where and why it happens. Fogging will generally occur when the worker moves from a hot region to a cold one, in hot humid zones or where the employee’s body temperature is higher than the ambient temperature.

The first approach should be to choose lenses that will cope with those environments or conditions. Lenses can be coated with anti-fogging or anti-misting coatings. These coatings are applied at the time of manufacture and ought to last the lifetime of the safety glasses.

These coatings will prevent the build up of water droplets on the lenses permitting clear vision. There are other coatings that can be applied too, so it is a question of seeing what types of coatings are obtainable from your supplier.

It is worth bearing in mind that not all anti-fog coatings are effective under all the conditions where fogging can come about, so you should be precise when explaining to your supplier why you need anti-fog lenses.

If someone has to enter an area where fogging often occurs, supplying an anti-fog fabric to wipe on their lenses is a short term help. These cloths are safe to use on most lenses, so it is wise to enquire. The effects ought to continue for several hours.

If workers move from one zone to another and have to swap their safety glasses from zone to zone, they ought to be shown how to identify safety glasses with the different coatings. Lenses that have been treated at the factory with an anti fog coating are frequently stamped with the letters ‘AF’.

It is worth learning how to deal with fogged safety glasses, because it can save a great deal of frustration, misery and money, if you just spend a little time getting the correct safety equipment.

So You Want To Do A Motorcycle Safety Course?

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

I live in a nation where fathers are proud that their children can ride a motorcycle at eight years of age. When the beaming parent boasts about this, I always ask of the cost of insuring such a young driver but the Thai answer is to smile. Their children are not insured but if they get into an accident, they simply hope that it will not be a bad one.

However, we all know that lots of motorcycle accidents are serious and that most of those concerned in motorcycle accidents are young people. Why would someone, a parent even, allow a child to ride a motorcycle without insurance? It is beyond me, but then, I am not a parent. I just think that it is irresponsible.

So, the first thing that a motorcyclist ought to do is take a course - a motorcyclists’ safety course, but even that will not help someone who does not have or cannot buy insurance. However, it is a very responsible thing to do to take a motorcyclists’ safety course, because you will be taught how to dress in safe clothing and how to avoid perilous situations.

The first thing to find out about a motorcyclists’ safety course is what it will teach you and whether you will be given a certificate for finishing it. It is also useful to know whether having such a certificate will entitle you to a discount on your insurance premium. It could well do, which will more than pay for the price of the course during your lifetime - with any luck.

A decent motorcyclists’ safety course should teach about the components of a motorcycle, what you can logically expect from them and why. It would also teach you fundamental motorcycle maintenance and repair. After that, it ought to teach you driving skills and how to sidestep accidents.

Wearing the correct safety clothing at all times is another requirement of a good motorcyclists’ safety course. You have to realize why doing something or wearing something is important. And in essence, it is important because it can save your life and avert accidents, which can save other peoples’ lives as well.

It is mostly teenagers who ride motorcycles yet teenagers are not well-known for acting sensibly, so as a parent or a responsible teenager make sure you find out about motorcyclists’ safety course in your neighborhood.

The Internet is the obvious location to begin looking for a motorcyclists’ safety course, but if you are stumped, then the local authorities, the local police station or the local accident prevention bureau will be able to put you on the correct track and so may the local library.

You know that it makes sense so just do it, if not to keep your own child out of danger, then so that he or she does knock me down while I am out strolling with my wife or my dog.

If You Come Closer You May Wind Up Taking A Peek At Me Nude

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Now you can set aside privacy and share photographs with associates and also with strangers. The newest photo-sharing network, Color, developed by Bill Nguyen is here! After just two weeks of exposure, it claims to seize a fairly respectable market share. Nguyen is the former owner of a music-streaming company Lala that he sold to Apple in 2009 for roughly $80 million.

Color is a social networking app for iPhone and Android devices that lets you reveal your photographs with anybody inside 150 feet. Basically, it is a photo-sharing application that is very similar to other mobile apps like Instagram or PicPiz. The plus aspect for Color is its proximity-based distribution performance. Because of this, it holds a far superior potential.

Any two users using the application in the vicinity of each other can share their photos. Color notes it automatically and records these events. The people you hang out with most appears higher up on your contact list. The person’s ranking goes down as the frequency of being together decreases. Color does not give weight to whether or not you know these persons you get close to most often. As long as they are inside the 150-meter radius, Color will regard them as friends.

In spite of the big possibility of this new app to create a new group of users, some are frightened. As it has been said earlier, Color does not display any privacy settings. All photos that are uploaded are entirely unhampered, shared with all other user’s phones inside 150 feet. While the company has asked users to respect personal privacy, the danger of abuse is not unfeasible.

Sequoia Capital, m Bain Capital and Silicon Valley Bank have put in a large amount of investment adding up $41 million. This large funding from such companies, considering that the app is very new, is an indication that Color has a huge marketing potential. And where would the revenues come from? These would surely come from advertisers.

The likelihood for Color to attain acceptance in a short period is not remote; in fact that could be out of the question. Its potential to generate an “elastic network” facilitates the user’s chances of finding further friends from strangers. Color has won the race in presenting a choice to those users who find difficulty in using the different older social networking applications.

The number of ways to lose your privacy increases every day. Now you can defend your Internet privacy by using a change ip proxy to change your IP address.
