International And Inter-racial Dating

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

This piece of writing is about my experiences of international and inter-racial dating. It is purely an account of what I have witnessed and experienced myself over the course of my life so far, although at 55 years old, I am nearer the end of it than the beginning. It is my advice on dealing with an international or inter-racial relationship.

It all began at an early age when I was in infant school at seven. There was a Filipina girl in our class and I could not take my eyes off her, although I almost certainly did not know much about it then. We parted at eight when they moved closer to another school and I never saw her again.

My next meeting with a foreign girl, was the mademoiselle junior teacher at school and I was convinced that I would marry a French country girl when I grew up. That passed when the German assistant arrived.

When I was fourteen, I went on a school cruise to Leningrad and there was a party of exchange students going home to Sweden on the same ship. I went out with one of them for about a week and first noticed the problems that can come from international dating. There was a minor language barrier, but it was fun getting over that. The real problem came, because I had preconceived ideas of what Swedish girls were like, probably instilled in me after years of silly ‘Carry On’ films.

At sixteen, I went to Germany to work for the summer and I found it very easy to get on with the German girls, although they were shyer that I was expecting too. Also an attitude I owed to silly Health and Efficiency ’sex films’.

After finishing university, I moved to The Netherlands to live. It was the seventies and Dutch girls were great. However, I made friends with male British colleagues first and soon saw some of the issues that can come from an international relationship. Most of the men I knew were typical Brits and made totally no attempt to learn Dutch at all. Surprisingly, many Dutch people could not speak English either, particularly the parents.

This lead to a surprising quantity of tense moments in a week and that put a lot of pressure on my friends’ relationships. It is so easy to start name-calling when you are angry and it is the worst thing you can do. The Dutch girlfriend or her parents or friends would be called ‘a stupid cheese eater’ or something equally daft and the relationship was over or in trouble for days. I do not recall what the Dutch called us.

I promised myself there and then never to get serious about a foreign girl because the arguments were just too much. Food was never a problem. Culture was not much of a problem, although where I was in southern Netherlands, most people were Catholic and I am not. This did perplex some parents but not me. Travelling was always going to be the drawback. Do you live by her parents or yours? In particular when children start arriving. Most countries have stronger family ties than Britain.

Then, at 50, having never been married, I went to Thailand, where I met my wife-to-be. Asian culture is very different from British or even European society and it is a real shock to both parties. Anyway, five years into our relationship and we are still fine. I recollect the reasons I gave myself for not marrying abroad when in The Netherlands and I was incorrect, but not much.

If you are going to enter into an international or even inter-racial relationship, you had better learn how to control your temper. It is the most important advice you will ever get. Being understanding of other points of view is important too, but not getting angry is more important. Furthermore, you must try to learn something about your partner’s land, background and language, otherwise you cannot join in any discussion your partner may have with someone who does know a bit about it.

I have never seen religion be a problem ever, except in an argument. My wife is Buddhist and I am not. We talk about it, but there is never any tension. Food, again I have never seen a problem in this field. Clothing, again no problem in my life. If you get into an international or inter-racial relationship, keep your temper, do not shout, do not get angry and talk things out calmly.

Electric Screwdrivers

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Have you ever had to deal with a stubborn screw that just would not go into the material as easily as you wanted? How about one that would not come out for you either? This is annoying as well as time wasting. Electric screwdrivers are a great resolution for these problems. They are very effective and inexpensive.

In line electric screwdrivers are designed for fundamental household projects. They are not very powerful, but more than adequate to get the task finished. For heavy duty work, consider using a drywall screwdriver. Some models offer various speeds. There are a number of models to choose from. Some are very similar in design to a straightforward screwdriver. Other are shaped like the number seven, with a handle for you to channel the screws in. Others come with a handle that pivots to help you to get into just about any angle you can come across.

Choose a electric screwdriver that fits well in your hand. Some of the handles are rough and others have a soft, foam grip on them. Hold the electric screwdriver in your hand and see how it feels after a few minutes. If you will be using it for long periods of time then comfort is very important. You don’t want to end up with sore hands or blisters.

Different electric screwdrivers have different amounts of torque electric and speeds. You will want to compare this information before deciding on the electric screwdriver you wish to purchase. Take some time to appraise what each power screwdriver is suggested for. Compare that with the work you are liable to take on with the electric screwdriver.

It is a good idea to maintain your power screwdriver fully charged. This will give you the best possible results from it. If the battery doesn’t hold a charge for very long, you will to swap the battery. Some people choose to buy a second battery from the start so that they can have one charging and one in the power screwdriver. This is highly recommended if you are going to be using the power screwdriver on a regular basis.

For those of you who mean to use your power screwdriver often, consider buying a power screwdriver kit. It comes with a sturdy carrying case. Inside you will find the power screwdriver and a slit for each accessory. You will normally get many sizes of bits to use. It will also include a power cord. Some of the power screwdriver kits also include an extra battery as well as a charger that plugs into your cigarette lighter. You can get a electric screwdriver kit at a much better price than having to purchase accessories individually.

Very few accidents truly transpire from using a power screwdriver, but they can. When using a power screwdriver, remember the driving force behind it. Both of your hands should be away from the area that turns. The turning blade can slice your hand if you aren’t careful. It is a good idea to use eye protection as well.

Power screwdrivers will drive through almost anything. It is very important that you make sure there are no power cords or wires behind the area where you are screwing. Keep your hair back from your face as well. Leaning forward to establish your progress can result in long hair getting caught and twisted on the blade.

A Family History of Carpentry

Friday, October 30th, 2009

My family has had carpenters in it for at least four generations and I can not go back any farther than that. My father’s father came from Anglesey, an island off north Wales called Ynys Mon in Welsh. I visited his place of birth once. We were directed by a local old-timer to a meadow, but we could not see a house or any ruins. I scrambled up unto a mound of earth to get a better view and then we realized that I was standing on his old home.

He had lived in a hole in the ground covered over with earth! A door was still on it, overgrown after 70 years or so of neglect and there was a kind of stone chimney in the long grass on the top. I was 10 years old and my Dad was 33 and it was the only time either of us went the length of Wales to look up our family history. It is more than probable that my great-grandfather was a shepherd.

My grandfather ran away from home at 14 years of age to Liverpool and became an apprentice ship’s carpenter. That would have been in 1914. What a time to choose to go out into the big world - the start of the First World War in Europe. He could not speak English at the time, but must have taught himself as he learned his apprenticeship.

He passed out as the best in his year and was given a set of the finest woodworking tools of the age. Each tool had a small brass plate in the handle with his name etched onto it. My father still treasured them when I was growing up.

I never met my granndfather; he died a month before I was born, but I was named after him and, knowing that I was due and that he was going, he left me a teething ring, which I still have. More to the point of this article though, there was not a single power tool in his tool bag when he died in 1954.

My father was the youngest son and when he was old enough, he had to leave school to be apprentice to his father who had stopped his roaming by then. Growing up with my father in the 1950’s and 1960’s, I do not remember him using power tools either. He used a brace-and-bit for drilling, several assorted hand-sharpened saws for cutting and his only consent to modern technology, a Yankee, which was a pump-action screwdriver. Everything he needed to hang a door or cut a roof was in one bag or later on a box, which he made himself.

I went away to study and travel and when I returned for good 12 years later, my brother had finished his carpenter’s apprenticeship and was working for my Dad. That would have been in about 1980 and my brother still vows to ths day that Dad only bought power tools then because he, my brother, had learned how use them in technical college. Something which my father always denied, although it did seem a bit of a coincidence to me. My brother, now in his Fifties, still uses hand tools where he can, but also has the full range of power tools in a near-by van.

His son, now nearly 30 is also a carpenter and he has a power tool for every job and throw-away saws. How times have changed.

Pool Safety For Children

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Having a swimming pool on your property can be a fantastic way to have fun for yourself and your entire family. However, despite that, it can also be very dangerous if you have children around. If you have the patience, you should wait until your children are at least five years old or more until you put a swimming pool on your property. On the other hand, if you already have a swimming pool, there are ways that you can safe-guard your children.

You should always remember to never, ever, allow your children to be on their own, unsupervised near your pool. Children are drawn to water and it just takes is a slip for them to be in the swimming pool. If you and your children are at your pool side and you have to leave the area even for a second, you must always take your children with you.

To be completely safe, you must always ensure that you have plenty of safety equipment around your pool at all times. Safety items are essential to have around, as they could save the life of a child or anyone else who can’t swim.

You should buy a shepherd’s hook as well, as you can use it to drag someone out of the pool. Having a telephone at your pool is also a wise investment, as you can quickly ring for help in the event of an emergency.

If you don’t already have a fence around your pool you should think about getting one right away. A fence is a useful way to keep children away from your swimming pool. If you have a protective fence up, you don’t have to worry about small children falling into it, while you are away from the pool. When you put your fence up, you should always ensure that it’s at least six feet high with a locking gate. In this way, no one can get into the pool without a key, which you have to keep on you at all times.

You could learn CPR as well. Even though you hopefully will not ever have to use it. It is always great to know CPR in the event of someone falling in your pool that is unable to swim. Whenever you have children you know can’t swim at your pool, you should always stay within reach of them, so you can react instantly if they fall in. A minute can be all it takes to save someone’s life.

Always keep in mind that swimming is fun, although you have to always think in terms of safety first. Once you have finished using your pool for the day, ensure that you secure the poolside well - and padlock the gate tight so no one can get in too.

Straight Marriages - Gay Unions

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

The debate about gay marriages has been a very hot political subject for many years and because it is such a hot topic, the number of places that have come out publicly either for or against the topic is not surprising. While there are few states that allow gay or same-sex marriage, there are a few that are more liberal, affording almost equal rights. Massachusetts is currently the only state in the United States that allows same-sex marriages. The state of Rhode Island is generous enough to recognize as a legal marriage any same-sex marriage that is carried out in Massachusetts, which is considered a major victory by many same-sex supporters.

Elections of recent years have seen this as a very hot topic and with the White House stating publicly that marriage can only be between a man and a woman, not same-sexes, many states have been very slow to allow same-sex marriages. However, a few states have allowed same-sex civil unions, which are very much like marriage.

Those states are, in alphabetical order: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, and Vermont. The District of Columbia also recognizes same-sex unions and the Governor of New Hampshire has promised openly that he will soon sign a bill permitting same-sex unions. This is a major victory for the supporters of the movement.

While many states have not given the green light to the topic of same-sex marriage, there are states which are sitting around discussing the subject. Many couples who are struggling for their rights have argued that there is just no difference in the manner they run their households compared with their heterosexual counterparts. They have also stated that while they may be with a partner who is the same sex as them, they do still love their partner and ought to have the legal right to marry them too.

This has always been a hot issue, and probably will continue to be a hot topic for many years in the future. While the topic rages within the states and at the national level, it will more than likely be quite a long time before the gay and lesbian rights groups can truly declare a triumph for their cause. Nevertheless, there is some solace to be taken in the small victories as they occur, and another Governor of a state being willing to permit a civil gay union is at least a step in the direction of victory.

However, the fact is that the actions of the individual states usually reflect the opinions of the President. With a President in office who is a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage as well as civil union, it is unlikely to allow much room for many more victories until a more accommodating, or rather liberal, President is in the White House. Only time will tell what President Obama’s views are.

After the bill has passed through all the channels of state, it will go into effect as early as the next year for the New Hampshire residents, who have been waiting patiently. Each state that gives this right to its residents opens the door to more states to become more tolerant. Finally, this paves the way for America to join the bulk of Europe in sanctioning the legal inequalities of straight and gay couples nationwide.

Child Safety and Online Dangers

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

What is there to say about the world children live in these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world that is dropping its standards, values, and morals each day, surrounds our children.

What makes it even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to prevent our children from visiting websites of an adult nature. These days children are knowledgeable about technology and sometimes more so than their parents. How can we keep our children safe from online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while still fighting the corruption that goes on in the world?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can protect our children by monitoring their time spent on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you have, however, I will write only of the Internet providers I am aware of, since not all programs are the same. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will need to go to Safety at the Toolbar and click on Parental Controls.

Once you get there, you will see a drop-down list of available usernames. Search for your child’s username and click on it. You will see a popup window appear. Click on ‘Edit Web Control’ and then click ‘Kids Only’, and close. Now your child is guarded against Internet sites that hold potential dangers.

Chat rooms pose serious dangers to children, since anyone can go into these rooms. Often predators frequent these areas, so as to draw children into a web of danger. In the AOL program, click on ‘Safety’ and then click on ‘Parental Controls’.

In the same way, click on the ‘Edit IM Controls’, ‘Edit E-mail Controls’, and ‘Edit Chat Control’ and follow the same steps as you did to establish the ‘Parental Controls’.

It is a good idea to install passwords. Passwords will offer additional protection and safety for your child. Do not give the child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might also reset the controls.

It is also wise to activate your ‘Popup Controllers’ too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could carry something that will corrupt your system or popup adult content, which your child will see if online. You can go into ‘AOL Safety’ at the toolbar to set these popup controls.

If you are using Internet Explorer, open a page. Click on ‘Tools’ at the top menu, click ‘Popup Blocker’ and then click ‘Popup Blocker Settings’. Read the information carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is standard and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium you might find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers presented to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. So, your child is in danger, and if you want to master safety, you will have to monitor, and take steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have met sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Further studies show that pornographic websites are making more profit than each of CBS, ABC, and NBC television channels each year. The surveys claim that the largest group that views porn sites are children and that these children are typically between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The statistics showed that around 74% of all the porn sites had uncontrolled banners, while another 66% of the websites did not issue adult content warnings. Furthermore, another 11% of the sites did not have ’sexually explicit content’ warnings and 25% boxed in their visitors by not letting them leave their websites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult sites requested adult permission for minors. So, it is vital to protect your child now!

Protecting Children with Mental Disorders

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Who are the predators? Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapists, rapists, paedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves, and so on. Predators often have mental disorders that prevent them from behaving properly in normal society. Children with mental disorders are often the prey of these predators, and sometimes children with mental disorders are the predators themselves. In fact, the distributor of one of the most dangerous viruses online came from an eighteen-year old from England.

Dangers mental disorders: Not everyone with a mental disorder is a danger to society. Generally, predators with mental illnesses are the victims of sociopathic, psychopathic and anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While there are a few other mental disorders that present danger to our society, this is a list of the most common potential dangers that wait on the streets and on the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers : Never treat your child as if he/she has a mental disorder. Treat your child as special, yet avoid treating the child as if he/she is mentally ill, because many mentally ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children have to live by and stick to those rules. Do not leave room for doubt when danger is present. Teach your child respect by showing respect yourself.

Children with dangerous mental illnesses will often want to watch pornography, violent images, content, and so forth. This makes it difficult as a parent to defend your child. However, it is vital that you lay down the rules. Never put yourself in danger while enforcing these rules, since some children with serious problems may cause you harm.

If the child refuses to listen to you, bring in the police and make sure that they do their job to help you enforce the rules. You may have to pay court fees and go through all sorts of rigmarole, but I can promise you that it will be worth it in the end. As a mother who has raised two boys with dangerous mental illnesses, I can tell you it won’t be easy but it can be done.

Children with mental illnesses often have brilliant minds that can usually get past any parental controls and will do so without you even knowing. Take more time than normal to monitor your child’s behaviour online. Teach your child that divulging personal information is dangerous and encourage them to request your permission when considering giving name, phone number or other information online.

Leave room for your child to take some responsibility and always encourage your child to participate in family discussions that involve them. Encourage the child to protect their safety by encouraging them to report any wrong committed against them.

One of the most difficult things you’ll ever have to do while raising a child with mental health issues is encouraging him/her to stay away from violent images and pornography. It is next to impossible to keep them clear of this trash. However, it can be done, if you set a good example for the child to follow.

It is important that you keep talking and listening to your child. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories and so forth without demeaning the child. You will be astounded at the knowledge children with certain mental illnesses have, if you will only listen to them.

The best advice I can offer you for dealing with children with major mental illnesses, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For more child safety tips for children with mental disorders get advice from a qualified professional.

Note Well: Children learn what they see and hear.
