Muhammad Ali - The Boxing Legend of the 19th Century

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Muhammad Ali was 70 on January 17th, 2012. He was the most feared opponent in the boxing ring in his long and active career and with very good cause. He won the world heavy weight boxing championship three times after winning a gold medal at the Olympics and was voted sportsman of the century by the BBC and Sports Illustrated.

Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 17th, 1942 and was christened after his father Cassius Marcellus Clay. They added the handle Junior, to distinguish him from his father who was a billboard painter. In 1967, Cassius changed his name to Muhammad Ali and became a Muslim.

A local white Louisville police officer named Joe E. Martin was the first person to see that the young Clay had something extraordinary while he watched him fighting over a stolen bicycle as a twelve tear old. Martin encouraged Clay to go to the boxing ring with him. Martin and Clay trained together at Stoner’s Gym.

Martin and Ali used to do a show together called ‘Tomorrow’s Champions’. Stone was a useful coach for Ali and he stayed his tutor for nearly all his amateur career (the last four years he was with Chuck Bodak).

As an amateur Ali won six Kentucky Golden Gloves, two National Golden Gloves, an Amateur Athletic Union title and the Gold Medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics for light-heavyweight boxing.

His history as an amateur was 100 wins and five losses. Ali was both hero-worshipped and vilified in his mother country. After Ali changed his name he refused to accept the name Clay, saying that his family had been given it by slave-owners.

He was also accused of switching his religion to dodge the draft, but his well-known reply to that allegation was: “I ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong… No Viet Cong ever called me nigger”. In 1966 he was barred from fighting in the United States. Ali was stripped of his boxing titles and his boxing license was suspended. So he fought abroad, frequently in the United Kingdom.

Ali’s first title fight was against Sonny Liston on February 25 1964, but it was nearly cancelled, because it became known that Ali had joined Malcolm X’s Nation of Islam. The promoter, Bill Faversham. was concerned that that may ruin the attendance figures, because Ali was not considered likely to win anyway (7:1 against).

Ali agreed not to authenticate that he had links with Malcolm X until after the fight and it went ahead. At the weigh in, Ali’s pulse was 120 as opposed to his norm of 54 and his opponent’s team misread this for nerves. This was when Ali, the Louisville Lip, first said that he was going to “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”.

Ali saw his first professional defeat in 1971 against Joe Frazier, although he won the title back from George Foreman in 1974. This was the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ which had political overtones.

It was ranked seventh in ‘The 100 Greatest Sporting Moments’. Ali’s fight against Chuck Wepner in 1975 motivated the film ‘Rocky’, which won the Academy Award.

Ali announced his retirement on June 27th 1979, but made a comeback 18 months later in October 1980. He finally retired in 1981, but before that the councillors of Louisville renamed Walnut Street as Muhammad Ali Boulevard. A dozen of the seventy street signs were stolen within a week.

In 1984, Ali was diagnosed as having Altzeimer’s, which people who have head shocks are more liable to get. Despite his illness, Ali has worked tirelessly for peace and equality and has represented America at several international peace negotiations.

He has won more prizes than anyone can possibly remember and established a $60 million not for profit centre in Louisville which houses his awards, but is there to promote peace, social responsibility, respect and personal growth.

On average, Ali travels over 200 days a year to raise money for and consciousness of poverty and hunger. It has been determined that he has helped supply more than 22,000,000 meals.

Angelo Dundee, Ali’s cornerman and trainer from 1960-1981 passed away on February 1st 2012 at the age of 90,

Why Archery Is The Intelligent Sport

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Archery requires flawless hand-eye coordination and a steady hand. In this situation, a steady hand does not come from not drinking alcohol, but by being so strong that the archer is not straining to draw the string and hold it while taking aim.

Rapid fire archery necessitates fast reflexes You could say that these qualities are desired for other objectives in general life and that may be a fact, but archery is the one sport that requires them all.

Shooting a gun accurately takes some of these skills too, but it does not need great strength and rapid fire is only a question of pulling the trigger or even holding it back. It is the case that when guns were developed, archers looked down on riflemen, because they did not require the same level of training to be good shots.

This is one of the main factors why guns took over from bows. It took 10-15 years to train a long bowman, but just a couple of weeks to train a rifleman. It was compulsory in England and Wales for all men and boys to practice with their longbows at the village butts on a Sunday where they were watched over and instructed by the local sheriff’s militia.

The long bowman was a respected figure, because everybody knew the commitment and skill it took to be an accurate archer. This was not merely a fact in Great Britain, but in each country in the world (except Australia) as far as we know.

Evidence of archery, but not the longbow, has been discovered everywhere from Europe to Asia and some of it goes back 12,000 years, which is a long time for a bit of timber to last, particularly when a broken bow would often have been a household item which could be used on the fire as fuel.

Prior to the proliferation of the bow, huntsmen and warriors used the atlatl (or woomera, in Aborigine Australian), which is a long, grooved stick used to hurl a one-metre long dart at almost 100 mph. There is proof that the atlatl was being used by Homo heidelbergensis 400,000 years ago in contemporary Germany.

The longbow and the flat bow were most frequently used in northern Europe where most soldiers walked into battle as only knights (nobility) had horses. On the other hand, in most other countries, where much of the fighting was done from horseback or from chariots, a shorter bow was used as it was less unwieldy and easier to move across the horse’s neck to shoot left and right.

The longbow and the flat bow were about six feet in length and had a typical draw weight of over 60 lbs but up to 100 lbs, which would fire a three-foot arrow up to 1,000 yards.

The shorter bows were recurve bows and although lighter to draw, it took a significant amount of ability to hit a target whilst travelling at speed on the back of a horse or bouncy chariot.

There are two ways of aiming any bow: by sight and by intuition. In sight shooting, the archer aims down the arrow and lines it up with the target allowing for distance, wind, movement etc, but in intuitive shooting, the archer just concentrates on the target. Intuitive shooting might come after lots of sight shooting practice.

Swimming Laps At Home In The Pool

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

It is a close call whether the world’s favourite way of keeping fit is hiking or swimming, but simply because not everyone has access to enough safe water to swim in. I think that walking is fine, but we do it each day, it is too normal; swimming, on the other hand, launches you into a totally different world where you require a different set of skills to stay alive.

Hiking is very good for massaging the internal organs and exercising the legs, lungs and heart, but swimming exercises every limb and muscle and massages the internal organs too. In short, swimming is probably a better exercise than walking, but hey, you can do both, eh?

Most people merely have the local swimming pool to go to, and unfortunately they can be a real pain to use now that people are not as considerate of others as they used to be. It is not so bad if you can go while the children are in school or if the pool keeps a few of lanes free for dedicated swimmers, but otherwise, swimming at the local pool is a chore.

Of course we cannot all have our own pool in the yard, we do not even all have a yard and we can not all live near the sea. The next best thing is to become a member of a private spa or swimming club. However, if you have a small patch of ground, you might be able to squeeze in a lap pool. A lap pool is long and thin, somewhere you could get one or two lanes in, which is plenty of room for swimming up and down.

A lap pool such as this would not be very expensive because it does not have to be deep for diving and you will not require a diving board or slide. Merely a ladder or steps at one end. Four feet of water would be enough for swimming as well.

Therefore, the lap pool does not have to be deeper than four feet or wider than six feet, but it should be as long as you have space for. Having a lap pool like this does not mean that you cannot only float or stand in it when the weather is hot. If you do not have room for this but would still like something, you could look into acquiring a swim spa.

It sounds fantastic and terribly expensive, doesn’t it? Well, they are fantastic, but they are cheaper than purchasing and maintaining a garden pool. A swim spa is the same as of a treadmill. A motor drives water at you and you swim into it, so that you are held in one spot by the current and your own efforts. You get a free water massage thrown in free as well!

It is expensive to be able to take advantage of water sports at home, but the consolation is that you will not have to pay to get into the local pool, you will not have noisy kids getting in your way and you will be fitter.

A Short History Of Hybrid Cars

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

The first difficulty with working out which was the first hybrid vehicle, is deciding what the term ‘hybrid vehicle’ means. For instance, a barge being pulled by a horse with the current of the canal could be construed as a hybrid vehicle. However, most people these days will agree that a true hybrid vehicle utilizes a ‘rechargeable energy storage system’ or an RESS.

For example, this could define a vehicle that uses one form of propulsion, such as an internal combustion engine as its main form of propulsion, whilst that engine recharges batteries that can also be used to run an electric engine.

I am certain that it will surprise 90% + of people to hear that the history of hybrid vehicles is almost as long as the history of automobiles themselves. Porsche is a famous make of expensive sports cars, but in 1898 Ferdinand Porsche, a young Czech student, designed the Loher-Porsche one-cylinder internal combustion engine.

However, this engine was utilized to drive an electric generator, the electricity from which was used to power electric motors which were affixed to all of the four wheels. The petrol engine was used only to generate electricity for the electric motors in this early case.

This early hybrid was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and was capable of travelling at 35 mph (56 kph). In 1901, Porsche drove it himself to win the Exelberg Rally. After this they sold more than 300 units of their early hybrid car. Mass production had not been invented yet and rich people were still sceptical about the new, malodorous technology.

1959 was the next landmark in the history or hybrids because petrol was not expensive and few people, if any, foresaw the future for the world and the environment. Anyway, the car invented, the Henney Kilowatt used the early transistors or those days to regulate the flow of electricity. This was the real precursor to modern hybrid cars.

One of the inventors of the Henney Kilowatt was Victor Wauk and he was involved in the process of experimenting with electric cars in the Sixties and Seventies. Sometimes, he is called the Godfather of Hybrid Vehicles.

It is fairly remarkable, but the regenerative braking system used by modern hybrids to help recharge a hybrid’s batteries was invented in 1978 by the electrical engineer, David Arthurs..

It then took until president Bill Clinton took the initiative to instigate the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles in 1993. It involved the Dept of Energy, Chrysler, ford, GM and one or two others. G. W. Bush replaced this program with his own FreedomCar Initiative in 2001.

This initiative was designed to finance extraordinarily risky or problematic projects for the development of hybrid cars. It has taken us over 100 years to rejuvenate the initial hybrid idea but we only did that because we were compelled to do it.

Getting Good Deals On Children’s Clothing

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Every parent knows how quickly children grow up and how often you have to replace their clothing. This is an horrendously expensive business. Children are a lot more fashion conscious now and much more aware than ever before about what they wear. They ask for designer this and designer that and that just adds to the cost of the articles of children’s clothing that you have to buy.

Children also have to have clothing for school. The question of a school uniform is controversial, but wearing a school uniform does take some of the anxiety out of buying children’s clothing. School uniforms are not really designer wear (although every school has a unique uniform) and they are usually hard-wearing. A big family can pass clothing down, but sometimes the younger children take exception to this. Fortunately, there are some other means of reducing the cost of buying children’s clothing.

One way of saving money on children’s clothing is to take advantage of ‘two for the price of one’ or ‘buy two get one free’ offers. That is pretty obvious information, but the twist is to ask if you can vary the sizes, so that you have two or three succeeding sizes, which will allow your child to grow into the larger sizes and give you a breathing space.

Endeavor to buy children’s clothing out of season, so that you buy swim wear in the winter and jumpers and coats in the summer. You will find huge discounts on out-of-season children’s clothing. Discounts of 75% are not uncommon. if you are buying in advance like this, it is important to remember to buy a size or two larger to take into account your child’s growth before it requires them.

Sweaters and jumpers offer great chances for saving money. Purchase a handful of jumpers at a time when they are on discount, possibly in the summer. Again, buy a variety of sizes. One warning here, do not buy seasonal or high-fashion colours that may seem out of place in a year’s time. Choose quite traditional, neutral colours.

When you have a clean-out of clothing that is too small or never worn, take them to the local charity shop. While you are there, see if you can pick up a handful of bargains. Charity shops are brilliant places from which to obtain children’s clothing at immensely discounted prices. The clothing is clean and blemish free, they represent great bargains.

Jumble Sales and bazaars are another good source of children’s clothing. Jumble sales and bazaars are often put on by well-intentioned institutions such as The Women’s Institute, The Guides, The Scouts, local churches and local schools. The clothing on sale is given by parents from the institution and it is sold to raise funds for that institution. It is usually of high quality and some of it is even new, purchased purposely to donate to the charity for fund-raising purposes.

A good way of customizing children’s clothing is embroidery. You could embroider or sew on a picture of the child’s favourite animal or pet. The child’s name, the name of a favourite band or a slogan is also very popular.

Skiing In France

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

An ambition of lots of the world’s skiers is to go on a skiing vacation in France. Some of the world’s most famous and best downhill ski slopes are in the French Alps. The French Alps are contiguous to the Swiss Alps, so if you have the time you could visit both on the one vacation. The French and the Swiss Alps are the most sophisticated in the world. English is spoken in both areas, but French is the local language in both the French and the Swiss Alps.

When you book your skiing vacation in the French Alps, it may be your first skiing holiday and you may be a bit worried about investing in all the costly skiing equipment that a skier needs.

However, it is a baseless worry because you can hire everything you need for your skiing vacation at most ski resorts. It is never difficult to hire skis, ski boots and ski poles, but you can often hire goggles and warm clothing as well.

It is vital to find out what you need to take yourself and what you can hire because the temperature drops rapidly and drastically in the Alps as the sun goes down. In fact, the midday can be quite warm, but by the mid afternoon it can be very cold and the nights can be deadly.

Prices for renting apparatus vary, but endeavor to get a fixed contract that you are comfortable with before you go. It is to be expected that going in off the street is the most expensive way of hiring the skiing apparatus that you require.

One tip is to make sure that your mobile telephone is always fully charged and that you have enabled ‘roaming’, which is the ability for a mobile phone to work abroad. If you get lost or injured in the snow, it could get dangerous very quickly.

One of the most famous skiing resorts in the French Alps is Val d’Isere. The slopes here are famous all over the world and cater for all levels of skill and experience. Ski resorts such as Val d’Isere have all the modern facilities that a skier expects, such as ski lifts, clothing and apparatus rentals, restaurants, bars, stores, travel agencies, and much more besides. The resort at Val d’Isere is the one to beat for ski resorts all over the world.

Language is not a problem for most tourists who would like to visit the French Alps as all the main European languages are spoken there. Food should not be a problem either as French cuisine and French wine is some of the best in Europe. If you choose to go on a skiing vacation in the French Alps, you will have a great time.

Make sure that you acquaint yourself with the safety rules of skiing and the specific resort you are going to and reserve part of your day for exploring the rich culture and fine restaurants of the French Alps.

Kitesurfing Safety Pointers

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Safety is a very necessary aspect of most sports, and even more so with some, like kiteboarding or kitesurfing as it is also called. It involves using a kite of between two and five metres in length to power surf across a plane of water.

This is where the greatest danger comes in, a sudden burst of wind can lift you off the water and carry you away. When the gust of wind drops, you could be dumped on rocks or slammed into the side of a building. The option is to let go of the kite and almost certainly lose it. This gets expensive, and being left alone in the open sea is not very nice either.

The fact is that you can never be completely safe when you are kiteboarding. However, the least you can do is try. So wear a safety helmet and a vest that will both minimize injury from an impact but also float. These two things alone will protect you from the lesser types of crash and assist you to swim back to shore if needed.

Gloves and knee protectors will also make life easier as will a pair of impact-resistant running or jogging shoes or trainers.

Never disable, and always use, any safety devices built into your equipment. It is there for a purpose. Some of these features might be quick release buckles or buttons and safety straps so that the kite cannot be torn from your grasp, leaving you stranded far out at sea.

Be sure of the winds that you ride. Both on-shore and off-shore winds are dangerous because the one will carry you out to sea and the other could drag you into cliffs or buildings. The safest wind to ride is a side-shore wind. A side-shore wind will be blowing across the bay, parallel to the shore.

It sounds too obvious to say ‘avoid collisions’, but in a way a collision is more perilous at sea than on land. It will take longer to rescue you and longer to transport you to hospital and you might drown. Therefore, do not kiteboard in busy waters - where there are boats or swimmers. Strive to allow a hundred metres clearance to anything that would injure you if you hit it.

Check the weather forecast and the predicted wind speed and use a kite that is suitable for that wind speed and your degree of skill. Do not try to run before you can walk.

Once your kite is aloft, get out on to the sea (or water) as soon as you can and when you are coming in, hold the kite low, so that there is less chance of you being carried away into the road or buildings.

Carry a knife when you go kitesurfing because lines becoming tangled up is not an uncommon phenomenon yet this can have a number of unpleasant effects. It can take you off to where you do not wish to go and it can tangle you up cutting deep into your flesh. Make sure that the knife itself poses no threat by storing it in a robust sheath. Wear safety goggles to avoid being blinded by spray.

Donating Clothing To Charity

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Do you check through your wardrobes from time to time or do you keep all you ‘old’ clothes for years and years? Some individuals never, ever throw out any clothes. Maybe they are waiting for them to come back into style or maybe they are hoping to lose enough weight to get back into them. However it is a good idea to have a regular clean-out, but do not throw those clothes away, donate them to a charity shop or a church bazaar instead. By donating clothes to charity, not only will it give you more room, but you will be helping to raise money for charity as well.

Additionally, you will be giving someone else the opportunity to obtain good quality clothing at a knock-down price. By donating clothes to charity, you will, in effect, be recycling your clothes and doing your bit for the environment at the same time.

When you are donating clothes to charity, they have to be clean, complete and undamaged. Check that there are no buttons missing, that they are not torn or stained. Some of the bigger charity shops also take other household items too such as books, knick-knacks and furniture. The same applies to these items with regard to quality.

There is a broad range of charities for you to choose from when donating clothes to charity. For instance, there are: shops run by: Dr Bernardo’s, The Salvation Army, Oxfam and Shelter and churches and the Guides and the Scouts are always organizing jumble sales and bazaars.

It is wrong to think that the only people who use these charity shops are the itinerant and the penniless. People from all walks of life visit charity shops on a frequent basis hoping to pick up decent clothing or unusual items and the money they spend on these items of donated clothing provides a pretty large and recurring income for the charities concerned. They have come to depend on this significant source of income.

Some communities also hold special events like a ‘Winter Coat Drive’ where people in the community contribute a new or used coat to the distributing organization, which then redistributes them to the disadvantaged. These drives can be aimed at all age groups, but they usually target children as the most innocent of the needy.

There are many sorts of organizations that accept charitable donations of clothing. For example, there is another one that accepts smart ladies’ business clothing. The idea is that when women want to come off welfare or begin a new life after being in an abusive relationship, they can have a suit for their job interviews.

So, you see, whatever your political beliefs or wherever your social sympathies lie, there are organizations that will suit your charitable ambitions. In fact, a lot of people find the gigantic charities like Bernardo’s and Shelter just a little too large and a little too impersonal so they prefer to give their spare clothing to a local charity that helps local people.

What Is Mixed Martial Arts?

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Have you ever seen a mixed martial arts bout? There are plenty of mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts on television, but in some countries, most of them are on Pay-Per-View (PPV). MMA is a very brutal and hard-hitting sport in which almost anything goes. Most of the bouts in America are organized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

MMA began about 2,000 years ago when it was a sport in the early Olympic Games. It passed out of the games for some unknown explanation, but it discovered a renaissance in Europe in the late Nineteenth Century.

Again, it died out, but came back with the Kings of the Square Ring in which Muhammad Ali took part in about 1980.

Again, MMA, which it was not called then, waned. In those earlier matches, the idea was to find out which was the best martial art, so they would put a boxer against a wrestler or a boxer against an aficionado of karate. In the early 1990’s, the emphasis shifted to finding out who was the best fighter, not which was the best discipline.

Fighters were allowed to use any techniques they knew. ‘Vale Todo’ (’Everything Goes’) from Brazil was vital in this development. In fact, many if not most of the modern MMA fighters have trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Gracie family from Brazil was (and still is) central to MMA.

In the Nineties, there were no rules really and everything went. Surprisingly, this seemed to hamper MMA’s rise in popularity, because as more rules were added to (slightly) limit the brutality, so MMA has boomed.

MMA is still very belligerent and brutal and fractured limbs are not uncommon. Fortunately, the death rate in the ring is way below that of some other martial arts like boxing, in which fighters focus more on the head than the body.

In contemporary Mixed martial arts, a fighter is permitted to use his or her body as a weapon according to any discipline they have learned. Most top fighters have studied three of four and are still learning more.

The most well-liked starting point seems to be Brazilian jiu jitsu, followed by boxing, wrestling, Thai boxing, karate, judo and aikido.

Because there are so many martial arts techniques, it means that no two fighters are likely to have the same style. This has the potential to make MMA more interesting than say, boxing, because MMA includes boxing, but boxing is merely boxing.

Wrestling damaged the image of TV bouts with its silly, choreographed dances known as fights. It did not fool many people and it was more of a joke than a real sport. MMA is categorically not the same.

It is not scripted, although a branch of scripted MMA might come about, who knows? The sport is still in its experimental days, despite having such ancient origins. Maybe it will even be a sport in the Olympic Games again.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on a variety of subjects, but is now concerned with Mixed Martial Arts Training Gyms. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Mixed Martial Arts Quotes

Some Simple Advice For Bet At Home Gamblers

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

It has never been simpler for people to bet at home, and this fact has helped the gambling industry to surge in popularity. While there have always been those who could make calls to a bookie and place wagers, the illegal nature of that activity often discouraged most people from participating. With the legal online gambling sites that are available today, many more people are now involved.

It is so easy to access multiple gambling sites that it sometimes seems as though there is no limit to the number of people participating in online gambling. Unfortunately, it is so easy to access now that there are many new gamblers participating in the activity who lack the experience they need to make good common sense decisions. For those bettors, it is important to understand some basic information that can help them to improve their rate of success.

Picking a site

New bettors must always choose their sites carefully. Though there are many good and reputable sites out there, there are also some less than savory outfits running online casinos. Every gambler should vet any new site he is thinking about patronizing prior to placing even a single wager.

Odds are critical

Understand how the odds in any contest are set, and use that information wisely. For instance, while poker odds and other games are based on statistical information, most sporting event odds are set based on how the bookmakers think that gamblers are likely to place their wagers. Players who understand this concept have an easier time finding real value opportunities in any contest.

Learn the games

It is a wise idea to thoroughly understand any game’s rules and characteristics prior to playing or betting on it. The same can be said of sports betting as well. Research the teams, players, or animals involved so that their strengths and weaknesses are understood prior to making a wager.

Don’t lose control

There has to be a time to call it quits for the day. Players who fail to establish set limits on their activities can easily find themselves throwing away thousands of dollars in a very short period of time. Set a limit and abide by it.

While these fundamentals cannot guarantee success in any online casino, failing to learn and use them can virtually guarantee failure. There is simply no getting around the fact that the only remote gamblers who can hope to enjoy long-term success are the ones who adopt a sensible bet at home strategy.
