The Fundamentals Of Making Quilts

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

If you have never done any quilting before, you may be forgiven for thinking that it looks fairly simple. The fact is that it necessitates a lot of patience, skill and diligence to create a quilt. It really is not as simple as it looks. It takes practice and attention to detail. Given that, you must use good quality textiles if you are considering manufacturing a quilt.

Cotton is fine for the job, but it ought to be the lowest you will go. No polyester or other man-made fabrics. If you do use these cheap fabrics and spend weeks making your first quilt, you will only regret it. If you make mistakes, but the fabric is good at least there will be that one saving grace.

Once you have chosen your fabric, you can choose the style or pattern that you want. This may seem backwards, and that is OK. If you want, you can choose the style first and then a fabric to match, but I would recommend that you just stick with cotton for your first quilt.

Next, you have to get hold of a pattern. This is very straightforward. You can either become a member of a local quilting group, where people will give you traditional patterns or sell you modern ones; or you can go on line and search Google or Yahoo for ‘free quilt patterns’ or you can visit to your neighbourhood craft shop and buy one that fits your requirements.

You will also need a decent set of tools to make your quilt. It is a pretty good idea not to scrimp on these tools as they are not expensive; will make your job a lot easier and will last a very long time. You will require at least one rotary cutter. ‘At least one’ because the wide blade cutters are very good for straight cuts whereas a small blade cutter is better for corners or shapes. By the way, these rotary cutters look like pizza cutters.

Because these cutters are sharp, you will also require a cutting board. This can be as simple as a sheet of plywood, trimmed to suit your table top or you can merely lay it on the floor. Without a board, you will damage your table or carpet. You will also need dress-maker’s scissors and large shears. Further requirements are pins, needles, cotton, straight edges and markers.

Your pattern will explain about batting and a back fabric and you must pay a great deal of attention to the recommendations in your pattern.

This piece cannot be a ‘teach yourself quilting’ manual, but I hope that it has shown you that you do not need a great amount of equipment to make very passable bedding quilts. However, with just a little adaptation of the pattern, you could make some beautiful duvet covers. Not many people make duvet covers, so you could either make them solely for yourself or sell them.

The History Of The Cushion

Friday, June 10th, 2011

In American phraseology, the words ‘cushion’ and ‘pillow’ are practically synonymous, but in the remainder of the English speaking world, a pillow is used on a bed for supporting the head and a cushion is used on elsewhere for supporting other parts of the body. A pillow is normally much larger than a cushion nowadays.

The cushion and pillow were most likely first used by well-off Asian men to lounge on. They would probably be referred to as throw cushions these days. However, we are going back so far in history that dyes and fabrics were very costly, so pillows and cushions were just for the wealthy and the patterns were so elaborate that they became pieces of art in themselves.

Needlework became a skilled profession as did weaving. Cushions were large sacks or cases filled with feathers, hair, wool, straw or something comparable. These days they are more likely to be filled with man-made fibres such as polyester. Down is the most costly filling particularly down from the eider duck.

Due to international trade, the idea of the cushion started moving westward and had arrived in Egypt by the time of the Pharaohs. Cushions have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. By the Middle Ages, cushions were to be seen in all the royal palaces of Europe. Cushions were still regarded as representing wealth.

The cushions of the royal palaces were substantial enough to sit in, a bit like modern beanie bags, and even started replacing traditional chairs. In those days, cushions were very substantial sacks manufactured of leather, many of which had needlework patterns on them.

Cushions were also used in churches for the wealthy to kneel on when saying their prayers. These special but small cushions were called carreaux because they were square (from the French).

Nowadays cushions are everyday items because they are much cheaper. Most cushions in the West are 17 inches by 17 inches and the reason for this is the traditional size of a roll or bolt of fabric. A roll of cloth is traditionally 54 inches wide, so it could be cut into three pieces of 18 inches, allowing for seams, this allows the manufacturer to make a 17 inch cushion.

Japanese cushions were much and still are, but they have a different role. In the West they are used for support, whereas in the East they are used for sitting on on the floor. In Japanese they are called ‘zabuton’ and measure 20-30 inches square by a few of inches in thickness, which is less than a quarter of the thickness of traditional Western cushions.

Zen meditators will frequently sit on another special cushion called a zafu or meditation cushion, which is placed on top of the zabuton. A zafu can be round or square but is small, often only 8-10 inches in diameter and 4-8 inches in thickness.

Zabuton are used in all aspects of Japanese life especially those aspects that have religious overtones or traditions such as sumo. Spectators of the sport will sit on zabuton while watching the bouts. If there is a foul or a dispute, spectators frequently throw their zabuton into the ring in revulsion.

The Importance Of Good Clothing

Monday, June 6th, 2011

One of the strangest social or cultural phenomena since the Second World War is the change in criteria which individuals use to purchase garments. For thousands of years before then, people wanted the best possible clothing that they could get and one of the criteria that they used to judge each other was their dress sense or the quality of their clothes.

This all started to change in the Seventies when it became more significant to not be seen wearing the same article too often, so it became more desirable to have five cheap shirts that would not last long than to have one high quality shirt that would last for years. How did this shift in principles come about?

The most obvious people to blame are the fashion designers (or their imitators) and the advertisers. Individuals without much money to spend on clothes do not like to be seen in the same blue shirt on every other occasion, they would rather have several colours, but perhaps these individuals do not understand the difference in the quality.

The quality of one’s clothing is vital as most women and about half as many men know. First impressions count and bright and cheerful (but cheap) is not as impressive to those who know the difference as quality.

To those people who say that the person should count over the clothing, I would say ‘Yes, in a perfect world. One day, but it is not the way it works now’. Why do people dress up for a date, and especially the first date? Why do people dress up for an interview? And why do individuals dress up to go to court?

It is because clothing matters and first impressions count and deep down, we all know it even though most of us wish that it did not matter so much.

First of all, it is important to find a style that suits you. Then you should purchase items of clothing that are decent examples of that style. They will not be cheap, but is a Hell’s Angel’s leather jacket cheap? Certainly not. Whatever niche you think you fit into or want to fit into, purchase the appropriate clothing to stand out for quality.

I am not saying that people have to dress appropriate to their age group, I am saying that people should dress appropriate to the upper echelons of their niche group. If you would like to become a Hell’s Angel, get one of the best leather jackets and if you want to work in an office, buy yourself a good suit. Just because you cannot tell the difference between a cheap one and a decent one does not mean that your peers cannot as well.

You just have so much scope to transform your physical appearance, but you can still create a big impression by wearing quality clothing like a decent overcoat, a decent suit, a good cardigan or a good shirt. The ones who know the difference will notice and it will not damage your prospects.

Doing Up The Children’s Bedroom

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Are you thinking of upgrading your children’s bedroom? Have they grown out of it or even wrecked it? Whatever the reason, it has to be done from time to time as your children grow up and have new needs or just require different size furniture. The first things to decide are how much you want to spend and whether you want any contribution from your children.

The answer to the first question, only you can know, but I would like to say that it can be great fun, a real eye-opener and a decent bond-forger to have your children in on the decision-making and the redecoration too.

Well, OK, the redecoration depends on their ages, but they can help strip off the old paper even if they are too young to assist with the painting.

I will assume that you are going to ask for your children’s advice. Positively do not take them to the shop first off and hope that you will get rational answers. The best approach is to discuss what they want and then show pictures on the Internet.

Make lots of notes and make certain the kids understand that they have agreed to their choices. Similarly with the colour scheme.

Attempt to steer them away from dreary, drab, gloomy colours. Most kids like primary colours anyway - yellow, blue and red - so you ought not have a difficulty here. Curtains and chair covers ought to be washable at home, not in a dry cleaners.

Try to get fire-resistant fabrics. If you are concerned about nightly accidents or simple spillages, you could get a few of mattress protection covers as well.

As far as the furniture itself goes, you ought to buy the best you can afford. Check the joints and try not to purchase anything that is nailed or stapled. You want furniture that is bolted or screwed together because it is stronger. You do not need me to tell you that children rock on chairs and bounce on beds.

If your children require a computer table, it can be a decent idea to have it bracketed to the wall or floor so that it cannot be inadvertently tipped over, breaking the monitor. Substantial bean bag cushions are always a good idea as well. They add colour, mirth and a comfortable place to read.

Children of all ages leave things lying about, so put a laundry basket in a corner somewhere and if the children are young, a toy box somewhere else. There should be cupboards and shelves, which is all that older children need. Make certain that there are plenty of them and then there can be no excuses for untidiness.

You may also want to provide a small dustpan and brush as a hint that you expect your children to clean up small accidents themselves. You never know, they may get the idea.

LED Lighting: Will They Replace Bulbs And Tubes?

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

LED stands for light emitting diode. LED’s are not new, they are the tiny red or green lights on the front of your stereo that tells you that the power is on. Some consoles have quite a few of them to show the state of preparation of the equipment. However, there is a new wave of interest in LED lighting by manufacturers. There is talk of LED’s being the future of lighting. In fact, there always has been these rumours about LED’s, but nothing ever seemed to come of it.

This renewed interest in LED lighting started in 2004 when vehicle manufacturers took another look at using LED lights in car headlamps. In 2008, Lexus produced the first ever car, the Lexus 600, with LED headlamps. These cars were exported all over the world except for North America. However, the 600’s headlamps were or are not true LED headlamps, the main beam is produced by filament bulbs.

The first authentic LED headlamps were fitted to the Audi V10 R8 sports car also in 2008 and the first American automobile was the Cadillac Esplanade Platinum in 2009. However, there is an innate issue with high power LED lighting, the rear of the diode produces a lot of heat. In fact, a cluster of high power LED’s produces sufficient heat to damage itself and melt the headlamp housing.

There are ways around this using heat sinks and cooling fans, but these solutions are not perfect, so technicians and scientists are still looking for ways to solve this problem. On the other hand, the front of the LED lights produces almost no heat at all, so if there is vapour in the headlamp unit and the ambient temperature is below freezing point, then ice crystals will form on the LED’s distorting and dampening the rays of light.

Nevertheless, scientists are confident that these teething problems will be overcome and that LED lights will one day be the most economical type of lights to use. In fact, it is already very economical to use and the LED lights units themselves last a long time. It is just the problem of overheating.

Other than their use in car headlamps, LED lights units can be seen in flashlights and in other parts of cars. Manufacturers are using LED lighting more and more often in brake lights, flashing indicator lights and hazard warning lights, because there is no problem at all with these fairly low powered LED lights.

LED lighting used to be either green or red, but now it is available in more colours. White and blue are common. The coloured lights that you see under some cars are another example of LED lighting. They serve the useful purpose of making the car of motorbike more highly visible. All right, that may not be why they were fitted, but nonetheless they increase the vehicles’ visibility.

Many more uses will be found for LED lights over the coming years. You will notice incandescent bulbs and even fluorescent tube lighting being phased out in favour of LED lights as the problems are surmounted, because LED lights is still in its infancy.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on different subjects, but is presently concerned with LED automotive lights. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Escort 8500.

Dressing For A Change

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Have you come to the conclusion that you would like a change of image? Or would you just like to smarten yourself up a bit? Perhaps you have a new career with new colleagues and you would like to take this opportunity to dress a bit more elegantly. Occasionally people like to transform their image while they are searching for or have just found a new partner.

While changing one’s image most individuals will focus on a new hair style and smarter clothes. Women might go for smart trouser suits or power dresses and men might decide to wear a lounge suit or a jacket and tie more frequently. If the weather is bad an expensive overcoat always completes the image, especially suede, cashmere or leather. It used to be that fur was de rigeur, but now it is duh.

However, there is another way of changing your image, a way that need not be that expensive, although sometimes it takes courage to try it. That is the wearing or the using of accessories. Women have more opportunity here in many ways, but men have options too.

Women can sport something in their new hair style; possibly co-ordinate bags and shoes; possibly wear a different style of stockings or could start wearing gloves, white kid, for example. They could modify the style of jewelery they wear and the colour or their hair and lipstick. Belts, brooches, watches and scarves can also serve the purpose of changing ones image. They could also wear a fresh flower on their lapel, in their hair or behind their ear for that old style gypsy look :-) (that is the brave one).

Men have a somewhat harder time of it without appearing daft, but men can wear better shoes, wear a tie more often or a costly watch. They could carry a briefcase and an umbrella, and wear a flower in their button hole, but this is where it starts to look a bit contrived. They could also wear a monocle, a pocket watch or a bow tie.

My cousin wears a monocle and once you overcome your first instinct to laugh, you have to admit that he looks quite elegant. The same is the case with bow ties, which he wears as well and insists on tying it by hand. He also carries an umbrella, a briefcase and wears pinstripes. He is very brave and he is noticed and remembered wherever he goes.

However, you do not need to go that far. Even simply wearing a bow tie instead of a tie will set you apart. Have you noticed that if you are talking to someone wearing a bow tie you cannot stop looking at it? It is the men’s equivalent of a woman’s low-cut dress.

Anyway, accessories are a cheaper way of altering your image than going out and buying a new wardrobe of outfits and they are more easily combined that different suits. Go for colours that blend easily, like blacks, greys, browns and off-whites. Understatement is usually better than garish.

The Basics Of How To Make A Quilt

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Constructing a quilt takes patience and precision, because there is a great amount of stitching to be done and that stitching has to be neat, straight and even. The material itself requires measuring and cutting and that is to say nothing of choosing and buying the material itself and the batting or stuffing.

You could leave out the stuffing if you want your quilt to be a duvet cover, but more on that later. In this piece we will take a low-level look at how to make a quilt.

The first step in making a quilt is designing it. You can do this yourself, but if you are a novice, it would be easier to select a quilt pattern from a craft shop or craft web site. You ought to attempt to train your mind to envisage the final product, the completed quilt. Some people have this ability naturally, but I think that it can be learned.

Do you want a plain quilt or a patterned one? Do you want a patchwork quilt? Patchwork quilts are more difficult than only using three sheets of cloth, obviously, but otherwise the principle is the same.

Once you have bought your cloth, wash it as you usually would, dry it and iron it. Cotton is nice and easy for the beginner, you can move on to other fabrics later.

Once you have your design or pattern and you have your cloth, you will need to begin measuring and cutting. Now, it is a good tip here to get some decent tools. You could make a quilt with your son’s school ruler and a pair of kitchen scissors, but you would be making things hard for yourself.

Ideally, you require a long, at least three feet, plastic rule and a equivalent size metal rule. You need a rotary cutter, which looks like a pizza cutter, dress-makers’ scissors and a pair of shears. Never use these cutting instruments for anything but quilt or dress making and never, ever cut paper with them. You will also require a substantial sheet of plywood to lay on your table, so that the rotary cutter does not score it.

You will also need quilter’s pencils for marking the cuts. There are various kinds on the market ranging from chalk to lead to soapstone. You will also require pins and needles and thread. When you have these tools and accessories you are clear to baste. Instructions on this will be with your pattern. There is a device to help you do the pinning, because your fingers can get fairly sore after a while. Do not pin your quilt to the carpet.

Quilting is the process of sewing the three layers, the patterned quilt top, the batting or padding and the backing together. This can be done by hand or by machine. Sewing by hand is conventional, but sewing by machine is more substantial. and faster. Then you are clear to do the binding. This also assists to give your quilt a professional look. If you want a duvet cover, you do not need batting and you can not quilt the fabric.

How To Make An Office Comfortable

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

If you want to run a happy office, you have to show respect for the people working in it and one of the ways that you can do that is by making them comfortable. People need to feel appreciated. If people feel appreciated they will put more effort in when it is most needed, when the chips are down and you require some extra work done.

This is not difficult to understand, in fact it is pretty obvious, but the funny thing is that this approach works on oneself as well. Even if you are the only person in your office and you get to keep all the money you earn and squander it on yourself alone, you will work more diligently if your office is comfortable, if you have some status-items and self respect.

Psychology is funny like that. You can push buttons just as easily sitting on a feather cushion on an orange crate, but it will never be the same as sitting on a leather executive swivel chair. So, if you are searching for office furniture, you have to look for comfortable office furniture. And appealing office furniture too.

Whether you are the only one in your office, you have permanent staff and especially if you use temporary staff, your chairs ought to be adjustable. That is the first priority, because it has been proven that the only way to maintain the right posture when sitting at a desk is to be able to rest your feet flat on the floor with your thighs parallel to the floor. If this is just not possible then you can use a footstool or a cushion under the feet.

Most people like their office seat to have casters so they can shift from the phone to the filing cabinet without getting up. An adjustable office seat will permit anyone coming in to work there to be comfortable within minutes.

If you apply this principle further, you must be able to look at what you are using to work with square on. You have to be able to sit in the middle of its width and look straight at it.

If this article of equipment is a monitor and keyboard, then the monitor and keyboard should be directly in front of you and you should be able to look at the monitor with it square to your face. If you do not have this arrangement, you will frequently get reflections and glare which can cause you to squint or have to dodge about and that is not comfortable.

Most screens are adjustable for angle of elevation, so turn the monitor to face you directly and then tilt it forwards or backwards until you are looking at it at ninety degrees or square on. If a exposed light bulb or tube is still being reflected on the screen, then get a shade or a diffuser for the light. If that fails, you can get a non-reflective screen to place in front of your monitor.

Provide a few cushions too. Some people might like to use them but be afraid to ask for fear of refusal. A few decorative cushions around the office can look lovely anyway.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on a variety of topics, but is now concerned with decorative sofa pillows. If you would like to know more, please visit our website at Modern Throw Pillows For Sale.

Does Your Vehicle Make A Statement About You?

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

It is obvious why a cop would drive a police cruiser or a lawn mower would drive a truck. It is easy to see that the person driving that particular vehicle is in some way engaged in a specific field work.

For many people, their vehicle isn’t just to get them from one point to another. It symbolizes all that they are. It is an expression of who they are. It says something about their lifestyle. It might say something about their wealth and status in life. It can even give you a glimpse of what is important to them as in the example of a driver of a hybrid vehicle. This individual is most likely concerned with fuel economy and the environment.

Mini vans are often chosen by parents because of the roominess and accessibility of getting their kids in and out to school and soccer games and social events. It also has plenty of storage room. They may like the added comfort of a DVD to distract their rugrats during long trips.

Other buyers may choose brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar or Mercedes Benz. The choice of these vehicles is certainly based on a reputation of quality and luxury but is also influenced by a desire to express status. The desire to show wealth and social status may play a role in the decision.

Shoppers who purchase trucks are known to be quite loyal to the brand of their choice. These purchasers may use their trucks for work and may base their purchase on the same criteria with which they pick the other tools they use. They may have a parent that only drove a Chevy and so they are part of a “Chevy Family”.

Some shoppers may opt for pre-owned cars. This is actually quite a smart decision because brand new vehicles depreciate in value quite rapidly.

Buying a car can be a very emotional experience. Making the decision to take on debt, dealing with and negotiation with salespeople, even deciding what color, all weigh on the purchaser. In my opinion, the car that you drive is rather important because it is the first thing that people see when you are on the road. So why not make a statement with your car? Are you quirky and fun? Perhaps a Volkswagen Bug would suit you. If you are sporty, why not choose a jeep or a SUV? If you enjoy the finer things in life and simply demand the best, nothing short of a show stopping luxury car will do. Life is short, so enjoy the car that you drive!
