Train Trips from San Francisco

One of the greatest things about visiting San Francisco is the being near to some fantastic attractions. You can lodge in one city yet visit several. You get not only the conveniences of the city, but the beauty of nature is not far away from almost any spot within the city. In fact, a short train ride will take you quickly to some nearby attractions that are definitely worth checking out.

One of the first train tours I want to talk about is not only a train tour but a bus and train tour. This trip goes from San Francisco to Yosemite Park. This trip involves transfers back and forth from bus to train but offers some stunning scenery and the ability to get pleasure from it without the anxiety of driving, rest stops and the need to stretch your legs.

Sometimes a little inconvenience is worth a lot more convenience later in your trip. The train portion of the tour lasts about three hours and you get to spend three hours in Yosemite. For some it is not worth the hassle and for others it is just what the doctor ordered - time to rest and relax while on the way. This is by far the most complicated of the train tours heading out of San Francisco.

The second tour is to wine country. The advantage of these tours is in the fact that you can enjoy your wine tasting experience without the anxiety of who is going to drive. Everyone in your group can enjoy the outing equally. Even more than that however, is that many tour groups have made the train ride itself more the event than the wine tasting.

With pastimes such as four course meals and Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre for your entertainment it is no wonder that this has become an event of choice for many excursionists to San Francisco. While this may be a more than somewhat pricey alternative, it is well worth the expense. You can always cut overheads elsewhere in San Francisco to make up for the expenditure.

Roaring Camp Railroads provides two train journeys that are both equally tempting in hugely different ways. The first is a trip back in time. This is probably my favorite. On this excursion you travel to the top of Bear Mountain while listening to tales about Roaring Camp’s part. This train tour lasts for an hour and is great fun, particularly for the little ones.

The second event by Roaring Camp Railroads is the Beach Train, which will take you to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The round trip from Roaring Camp to Santa Cruz and back is about three hours and well worth every penny if you have a budding engineer among your young ones.

Perhaps the most magical of train excursions is the Christmas Train trip from Oakdale. This tour includes Santa, his elves and a little Christmas magic. What more could you ask for? Well, I suppose that that depends on whether you made the naughty list or the nice list. This train ride is magic for everyone that joins it, young and old alike will enjoy the magic that only Christmas can bring.

Whether you are a big kid, a little kid, or somewhere in between, I am ready to wager that the magic of a train ride has not been totally lost over the years. In fact, I am willing to bet that if you allow yourself to sit back and just enjoy yourself, you will enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

100 Year Old Marklin Toy Trains - One Of The First

There are individuals who collect toy trains or model trains as some may call them. As you can imagine most of them are men and lots of people would say that they are in still in touch with their childhood.

This is not to mean that they are childish, it is not a criticism. Some collectors display their collection at fayres, while others are content with showing them off to friends at home.

However one attribute that they all share is enthusiasm. Collectors of train sets tend to get very enthusiastic about their hobby, frequently dedicating a whole room or more to their trains. One of the classic trains that no collector would not want in his collection is a Marklin, which were first manufactured in 1891. Classic Marklin trains are high up there on a collectors wish list.

Marklin was the first maker of toy trains that produced standard gauges, but a number of different models of trains and corresponding accessories. This really started the hobby of collecting toy trains, because you could buy a train and some track and later buy more track and a carriage of a different train and run it on the same track. This strategy also had the effect of allowing less well off families to buy a train set for little Arthur.

Marklin train sets are really a part of history, but they are beautiful too. And rare. It is standard to pay thousands of dollars for a single item. A complete Marklin station including a rare Marklin 2609 was sold at auction in America for $110,000. The station was superb and the train and its carriages had been hand painted, but it is still a immense amount of money for a train set.

The original estimate for this train set and station was around $30,000, which was considered right because it was practically unique. A European and an American collector fought at the auction to the finish with the American winning in the end. The station and the carriages had tables with individuals sitting at them reading the paper and drinking tea or coffee.

However, that was by no means the only Marklin that went for more than was expected. There was a gauge III Marklin 2609 in the auction as well and that went for $82,500. It was a beautiful, hand-painted steam engine in exquisite detail. The original price set for this piece was $25,000. Several other Marklin pieces were sold at the auction and none of them sold for less than $25,000.

So a Marklin train set is certainly something to look out for next time you go to a garage sale or a church bazaar. However at a 120 years old, you are not likely to find a Marklin train set or even a solitary locomotive, but jolly good luck luck in your search.

Trains In Seattle And The Inner Child

Boys and girls of all ages love trains and train sets. They have played a vital part in the history of this country and Seattle, Washington and the Northwest in particular. In fact, the roles of trains in this part of the country have in the past been so vital that there are a couple of museums dedicated to them. Trains were essential supply routes for the population here for many years. While their importance seems to be dwindling in today’s society, their significance throughout the history of our country remains.

If you really are a train lover, then it should not be difficult to talk you into stopping by Seattle’s Train Center before and after touring the museums dedicated to trains and their vital role in history. The Train Center offers a wide selection of model train parts and pieces that would make excellent additions to your train set or a great beginning for a train set for you or your kids.

After you’ve whetted your enthusiasm for trains and gotten your child all excited about them, it is time to take a walk back in time to the Northwest Railway Museum. There are certain limitations on the type of seating, but it is a great way to enjoy the experience at a greatly reduced price. There are also exclusive events such as Murder Mystery Trains and Magic and Illusion shows in addition to certain holiday events as well. Be sure to check out what is going on while you are visiting Seattle and see if this is something that might interest you and your family.

If you are up for a not so short drive to Pasco (about three and a half hours from Seattle), you might find the Washington State Railroads Historical Society Museum well worth the journey. Be sure to remember that the museum is only open on Saturday and that the hours are restricted so this is a journey you need to plan in advance. The greatest thing about this museum to me is the fact that there are lovely little stories, like the blackboard that recorded the first snowfall at the depot each year and others such as this.

It is the little stories that do not necessarily make history that do make long-lasting impressions and I am happy to see this particular story is being shared. Just remember, when visiting any of these depots, museums, and train excursions that you definitely must bring your inner child with you in order to enjoy them as you should.
