One of our everyday use items is the car. Most people use theirs everyday and a number of times a day. It therefore follows that there will come a time when one part of the car or the other will need to be repaired. Gearbox repairs are one of the kinds of repairing that will be needed. Whether a gearbox is manual or automatic, it can be repaired. If for any reason repair is not possible, then another manual transmission can be put in and it can be a new one or a reconditioned one.
The function of the gearbox or transmission is to give a car other machine with a motor, speed and torque conversions. This is facilitated by a rotating source of power that passes on power to another device using the gear ratios, commonly known as just gears. Some gear boxes will also have directional control which would make it possible for a car to be moved backwards and forward. A car may also have single-ratio transmissions which facilitate accelerating and decelerating, changing torque and in some vehicles, it also facilitates changing the direction of motor input.
Different parts can stand for different things depending on the country you are in and it is important to understand these differences. In Britain, what is referred to as transmission is all of the drive train; this includes the gearbox, the clutch, the pop shaft for cars that have rear-wheel as part of the four wheel drive system and also the shafts for differential and final drive.
Note that parts like the gears and transmitter are referred to differently in different places. If you are in the UK, transmission is the entire drive train and that includes the manual transmission, the clutch, the pop shaft in cars that have rear-wheel drive, differential and final drive shafts.
The problem that you have is with the manual transmission when it is impossible to change gears without a problem or if there are strange sounds going as you drive. It can also be the clutch that presents a problem. A number of garages undertake manual transmission repairs. Some shops are able to undertake repairs of all types of vehicles while others specialize in specific types of cars such as classics like the Austin Healey. Other shops handle only manual transmissions and overdrives and will also take on differential repairs for other classic models such as AC, MG, Rootes, Jaguar, Rover Triumph and TVR. Yet other garages will only work on today’s brands of cars like Volvo, Ford, Audi, BMW, Honda, Renault, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Mercedes and other brands.
Take your time in finding a capable mechanic when your gearbox needs repairs. Go for a professional as this influences your safety on the road. Take note of one interesting fact as well; it costs less to have a manual transmission transmission repaired compared to have it replaced.
What you will usually get however is a quote for replacement as it is not easy to find mechanics who can repair a gearbox. It is an expensive component and they are aware that doing it wrongly could mean having to replace it. More importantly, it could compromise your safety on the road.
It is therefore important that you get your work done at a competitive garage that has the training and experience it takes to carry out manual transmission repairs as well as transmission and clutch repairs.
